  • 1. The Skin By: Frank Lemond Biology 120 June 17, 2010
  • 2.
    • I recently learned that the skin is an organ. Prior to that, when I thought of organs, I associated that with internal organs that we can’t see, such as the stomach.
  • 3.
    • The skin is the biggest organ in the body in terms of surface area.
    • The accessory organs of the skin are: the sebaceous glands, the sweat glands, the nails and hair, so these 4 + the skin = 5 components.
    • These components comprise the integumentary system, so the skin = the integumentary system.
  • 4. Epidermis
    • In addition to the 5 components of skin, the skin has 3 layers.
    • The outermost layer (that we see) = the epidermis. The epidermis is a thin membrane. (The photo @ left is an electron microscopic view of the epidermis). The deepest layer of the epidermis contains a protein called keratin (the same substance in hair & nails).
  • 5. dermis
    • DERMIS
    • Inside (underneath the epidermis) = the dermis, also known as the corium.
    • The dermis consists of: collagen fibers.
    • In addition to the aforementioned sebaceous and sweat glands, nails and hair, the dermis contains muscle fibers, nerve fibers, sense of touch receptors, lymph vessels and blood vessels
  • 6. SUBCUTENEOUS LAYER
    • The 3 rd (deepest) layer of our skin = the subcutaneous layer. This layer = aka the hypodermis.
    • This inside tissue layer consists of lipocytes (fat cells) that insulate the body & protect the internal organs + skeletal structure.
  • 7. FYI
    • FYI:
    • This photo, taken with ultraviolet light, is of a rhino’s horn. The horn = covered with a thin coating of hardened keratins. (Again, the same substance found in our hair & nails).
  • 8. FINALLY
    • Skin = a miraculous thing. Unfortunately, some desperate women (& men) sell their precious bodies.
