Urinary incontinence is loss of bladder control. Symptoms can range from mild leaking to uncontrollable wetting. It can happen to anyone, but it becomes more common with age.

Most bladder control problems happen when muscles are too weak or too active. If the muscles that keep your bladder closed are weak, you may have accidents when you sneeze, laugh or lift a heavy object. This is stress incontinence. If bladder muscles become too active, you may feel a strong urge to go to the bathroom when you have little urine in your bladder. This is urge incontinence or overactive bladder. There are other causes of incontinence, such as prostate problems and nerve damage.

  • OverviewMost bladder control problems happen whenmuscles are too weak or too active. If the musclesthat keep your bladder closed are weak, you mayhave accidents when you sneeze, laugh or lift aheavy object. This is stress incontinence. If bladdermuscles become too active, you may feel a strongurge to go to the bathroom when you have littleurine in your bladder. This is urge incontinence oroveractive bladder.   • CausesIncontinence is often seen as part of aging. But itcan occur for many other reasons. Forexample, urinary tract infections, vaginal infectionor irritation, constipation, and some medicines cancause bladder control problems that last a shorttime. When incontinence lasts longer, it may bedue to:-- weak bladder muscles 3
  • Causes-- overactive bladder muscles-- damage to nerves that control the bladder fromdiseases such as multiple sclerosis or Parkinsonsdisease-- diseases such as arthritis that may make itdifficult to get to the bathroom in time-- blockage from an enlarged prostate in men 4
  • DiagnosisThe first step in treating incontinence is to see adoctor. He or she will give you a physical exam andtake your medical history. The doctor will askabout your symptoms and the medicines you use.He or she will want to know if you have been sickrecently or had surgery. Your doctor also may do anumber of tests. These might include: 5
  • Diagnosis-- urine and blood tests-- tests that measure how well you empty yourbladder-- In addition, your doctor may ask you to keep adaily diary of when you urinate and when you leakurine. 6
  • TreatmentToday, there are more treatments for urinaryincontinence than ever before. The choice oftreatment depends on the type of bladder controlproblem you have, how serious it is, and what bestfits your lifestyle. As a general rule, the simplestand safest treatments should be tried first. 7
  • Treatment **Bladder Control Training**Your doctor may suggest bladder training to helpyou get better control of your bladder. Withbladder training, you can change how your bodystores and releases urine. There are several waysto do this: 8
  • Treatment **Bladder Control Training**-- Pelvic muscle exercises (also known as Kegelexercises) work the muscles that you use to stopurinating. Making these muscles stronger helpsyou hold urine in your bladder longer.-- Biofeedback uses sensors to make you aware ofsignals from your body. This may help you regaincontrol over the muscles in your bladder andurethra. Biofeedback can be helpful when learningpelvic muscle exercises. 9
  • Treatment **Bladder Control Training**-- Timed voiding may help you control yourbladder. In timed voiding, you urinate on a setschedule, for example, every hour. You can slowlyextend the time between bathroom trips. Whentimed voiding is combined with biofeedback andpelvic muscle exercises, you may find it easier tocontrol urge and overflow incontinence. 10
  • Treatment **Bladder Control Training**-- Lifestyle changes that may help withincontinence include losing weight, quittingsmoking, avoiding alcohol, drinking less caffeine(found in coffee, tea, and many sodas), preventingconstipation, and not lifting heavy objects.**Management** 11
  • Treatment **Bladder Control Training**Besides bladder control training, you may want totalk to your doctor about other ways to helpmanage incontinence:-- Some drugs can help the bladder empty morefully during urination. Other drugs tighten musclesand can lessen leakage. Talk with your doctorabout the benefits and side effects of using thesemedicines. 12
  • Treatment **Bladder Control Training**-- A doctor may inject a substance that thickens thearea around the urethra to help close the bladderopening. This reduces stress incontinence inwomen. This treatment may have to be repeated.-- Special devices for both men and women couldhelp control incontinence. 13
  • Treatment **Bladder Control Training**-- Surgery can sometimes improve or cureincontinence if its caused by a change in theposition of the bladder or blockage due to anenlarged prostate.-- You can buy special absorbent underclothingthat can be worn under everyday clothing. 14
