Detox diets are short-term diets intended
to release toxins and waste products from the body. The notion of detoxing
stems from a theory of digestion and elimination usually associated with
naturopathy, an alternative medical system that emphasizes the role of nutrition
in optimizing the body’s self-healing properties. Detox diets generally
emphasize the following:



-- Choosing organic or non-processed foods to
ensure the minimal intake of chemicals


-- Increasing the intake of vegetables, fruits
and other foods thought to aid the process of detoxification


-- Increasing the intake of foods and fluids
that speed up the processes of urination and defecation

The origins of Detox diets can be traced
back for over 5,500 years to a yearly ritual of bodily and spiritual
preparation known as pancha karma - part of the practice of Ayurvedic
medicine in India. Pancha karma is undergone for disease prevention, which in
Ayurvedic practice requires spiritual renewal and the cessation of negative
emotional patterns.
