Also, ask them what their thoughts on getting a permit are. If the contractor replies "oh it's not necessary", this should be a
big red flag for you that this individual is shady. Permits protect the contractor just as much as they protect the homeowner.

3. Don't hire the cheapest individual. You will usually get what you pay for. Also, if the price is too good
to be true, It is! I've met with too many individuals who had bids for outrageously low amounts and wrote checks only to
never see that individual again. Also, if the individual asked you to write the check out to themselves, that should open your
eyes to something's not right.

4. Don't hire someone who can start tomorrow. If a contractors not busy in this economy, in this
state, somethings wrong with them. Good contractors should have at least a week or two waiting period before they can
start.

5. References and referrals are great but check with local vendors. Any contractor
can stack their references online in their favor. And any smart contractor would never give you a referral of an upset past
customer To call. One of the best ways to find reputable contractors is through a local supply house such as Burton Lumber,
Home Depot, Standard Plumbing, or Lighting Design. These local suppliers will have names and contact information of
reputable businessmen in the area.
