What is a self-directed approach to disability support?
The person with a disability is in control and makes decisions according to his or her preferences.
the type of service
When, where, when and by whom the service is provided
how the support is financially administered
the person with a disability receives information they need to make decisions in a way that they can understand
There are sufficient resources available to achieve what the person wants

My experience without self-directed support
Agency unable to cover shifts
Insufficient matching occurring
Poor administration
Inadequate remuneration to attract suitable staff
Indirect communication processes
Inflexible arrangements
System breakdown

James (3 years, physiotherapist, provides weekly support in the evening, provides training sessions and responsible for OHS and training)

Final thoughts…
For too long service providers have dictated how disability supports are provided
People with disability are saying they want more control and choice around how their supports are provided
For some, this may involve directly employing staff and for others it may simply mean more input into the recruitment of their support team
We need to recognise self-directed support and self-management of support as a spectrum of control and that individuals should be able to choose where they sit on that spectrum
Some service providers are embracing self-directed approaches
DHS has made some positive moves through the service reorientation unit to move disability services towards more self-directed approaches.
