  13. 13. Literature Searching 1. Start with an area of interest 2. Construct your search statement 3. Select the best resource 4. Formulate search strategy 5. Perform search; evaluate your results...try again, if necessary

  16. 16. 3. Select the best resource Questions to ask: 1. What kind of information do I want? 2. What do I need this information for? 3. What subject areas does my question cover?
  17. 17. Match the resource to the information • Nursing research articles • CINAHL • Psychology review articles • Library catalogue • Management textbooks • PsycINFO • SCOPUS • MEDLINE
  18. 18. 4. Formulate your search strategy • How to complete a concept grid 1. Underline the key concepts in the question 2. Decide how the concepts will be combined together using AND and OR Boolean operators 3. Concepts to be ANDed go across the grid and concepts to be ORed go down the grid
  19. 19. Create a concept grid “I’m looking for current scholarly articles (past five years) about conflict resolution between doctors and nurses.”

Perform the search • Enter the search terms one at a time • Search subject headings first • Then search keywords • Combine your synonyms first using OR • Them combine the different concepts using AND • Finally... apply limiters And adjust accordingly.... If no results, try removing some terms... If too many, try adding more

  24. 24. Step 1: Create an Account • Open a new browser window and go to http://www.lib.uwo.ca/ • Select “RefWorks” • Sign up for an individual account • Register
  25. 25. Step 2: Create a Folder • Under the Folder menu header, select “create new folder” • Name it “N3319 – Library Orientation” • Log out of RefWorks

  27. 27. Step 4: Move the citations into your folder • View your “Last Imported Folder” • Select all the citations and put them into your N3322E folder
  28. 28. Step 5: Create a Bibliography • Select “Bibliography” from the tool bar • Select APA as your output style • Select “Format a Bibliography from a List of References” • Select “References from a Folder” and pick your N3319 • Click “Create Bibliography”
