  • 2. What is an invertebrate? <ul><li>Invertebrates don’t have a backbone .
  • 3. They are usually smaller than vertebrates.
  • 4. All invertebrates are oviparous.
  • 5. Most animals on earth are invertebrates.
  • 6. Some live on land and others live in the soil.
  • 7. Some live in water.
  • 8. Some can fly. </li></ul>
  • 9. What do invertebrates eat? <ul><li>Not all invertebrates eat the same food. </li></ul><ul><li>Some eat only plants. </li></ul><ul><ul><li>They are herbivores . </li></ul><li>Some eat only other animals. </li><ul><li>They are carnivores. </li></ul><li>Some eat plants and animals. </li><ul><li>They are omnivores. </li></ul></ul>
  • 10. Classifying invertebrates <ul><li>It is more difficult to classify invertebrates because there are so many groups. </li></ul><ul><li>The most important groups are:
  • 11. Molluscs
  • 12. Anthropods
  • 13. Worms
  • 14. Jellyfish
  • 15. Sponges
  • 16. Starfish </li></ul>
  • 17. Molluscs <ul><li>Mollusks have a soft , muscular body.
  • 18. Some, like snails, have a shell .
  • 19. Many molluscs live in the sea .
  • 20. Mussels, oysters and octopuses are all molluscs. </li></ul>
  • 21. Anthropods <ul><li>Anthropods are the biggest group of invertebrates.
  • 22. Their bodies are divided into 3 parts.
  • 23. They have a hard skin and joints in their legs.
  • 24. Insects (ants and bees) and arachnids (spiders and scorpions) are anthropods. </li></ul>
  • 25. Worms <ul><li>Worms have a long , soft body.
  • 26. Some live on land and others live in water .
  • 27. Some worms are parasites. They live inside another animal and feed on them. </li></ul>
  • 28. Jellyfish <ul><li>Jellyfish live in water.
  • 29. They have soft bodies and tentacles.
  • 30. Be careful! Their tentacles can sting you! </li></ul>
  • 31. Sponges <ul><li>Sponges have soft bodies covered with holes .
  • 32. They live in water. </li></ul>
  • 33. Starfish <ul><li>Starfish are protected by hard outer parts.
  • 34. They live in water.
  • 35. They usually have 5 arms , but some can have even 20! </li></ul>
