  • Welcome! We’re here today to talk about ecotourism, a very common term that, surprisingly, not many people really understand. Many tour operators, travel agencies, and communities use “ecotourism” as a marketing term, but what does it really mean? And when we participate in something labelled as ecotourism, what can we expect?
  • First, let’s discuss why ecotourism is important. For one, the tourism industry has a very large environmental impact, for a number of reasons. Many travelers, especially international travellers, use commercial flights, the most carbon intensive form of transportation, to reach their destination. Also, tourists can often be less considerate of the environment and resource conservation than they would be at home. This could be attributed to the “vacation mentality”, in which people reason that because they’re not directly paying the bills or staying in the place permanently, they have less invested in the health of the area (for example, people might leave the air conditioning on because they don’t have to pay the energy bill). This often affects developing countries more than developed ones, because a lack of infrastructure can amplify environmental impacts.
  • so, what's "ecotourism" exactly? The term “ecotourism” has no official definition, but is considered by the International Ecotourism Society to be any form of tourism that deals with “responsible travel to natural areas that conserves the environment and improves the well-being of the local people.” In other words, ecotourism is travel that takes the environmental and social health of the visited areas into account. This involves doing a number of different things to make sure that visitors are taking good care of the environment and the local population,
  • Ecotourism is also a new and unique way to learn about interesting places and cultures.
  • Here in China, there are also ecotourism companies making great strides. One of these is Naked Retreats, an eco-resort hotel operator based in Moganshan. They have some the best practices in Chinese ecotourism, focusing a lot on making their buildings greener, which makes sense because they are a hotel operator!Naked realizes that between 30% and 40% of world energy use comes from buildings, and so making building more energy-efficient could have a significant positive impact both on the environment and on utility bills. Some of the measures Naked has taken with its buildings include:Rainwater capture to reduce water usageGreywater recyclingPassive solar heating, utilizing daylight instead of burning fuelNatural ventilation在这里,在中国,也有生态旅游公司作出了巨大的进步。
  • Local foodUsing local labor and materials for building constructionRecycling old building materials (i.e. re-using wood, metal, etc from older buildingsAll of these measures and others taken by naked Retreats help to both minimize the environmental impacts of the their operations and to improve the quality of life for the local community – things that a successful and responsible ecotourism company should accomplish.
  • These examples offer a glimpse of what good, sustainable ecotourism development in China and the rest of the world could look like. Although pressures will increase with the greater influx of tourists, there is a path for a gentle type of development, and that’s what ecotourism is all about. The future for ecotourism is bright!Thank you! 谢谢!Thank you!
