  1. 1. COMMUNICATIVE METHOD-COMMUNICATION SKILLSLESSON PLAN: A key aspect of effective teaching is having a plan or model Performa for what will happen in the classroom. A lesson plan will have a clear and explicit presentation of aims and objectives and of the procedure by which they are achieved. It will be a reminder of the order of events in the lesson and aids to be arranged immediately before the lesson. Lesson plans do not consist of formal statements. It should be observable and measurable. A lesson plan is the instructor’s road map.Topic:Communicative Language TeachingClass/level:ElementaryDuration of Class:60 minutesNumber of Students:ThirtyMethod:Communicative MethodMaterial provided:HandoutsAudio/ Visual Aids:Charts, pictures, whiteboard, flash cardsTEFL Page 1
  2. 2. COMMUNICATIVE METHOD-COMMUNICATION SKILLSClass Formation: Divide whole class in Pairs or groups.Input: Different strategies and activities will be used at different stages for this purpose. If learners make errors, teacher will ignore because communication will be created by individual effort through trials and errors. Learners will be given the opportunity to express their ideas and opinions.Expected outcome: To large extent, hesitations of students will be removed. Student will start communication with their fellows in foreign language. Their interaction will be in the target language. Their pronunciation and vocabulary will improve. They will be more co-operative with each other.Expected problems to students: There can be a number of problems which the students will face while learning target language by communicative approach which are as following: Learners will feel hesitation to communicate with class in the target language. Fluency problem can also be there with the learners in the beginning. Lack of vocabulary will also be one of the hurdles in communication. Due to problem in pronunciation they will be uncomfortable with speaking in target language. They can also face difficulty to understand teacher’s instruction.AIMS & OBJECTIVES: The main objective of this approach will be communicative competence and meaningful negotiation of the learners.TEFL Page 2
  3. 3. COMMUNICATIVE METHOD-COMMUNICATION SKILLS Fluency in speaking while communication will be given more importance than the accuracy. This method will also aim at the higher confidence level and co-operation among the learners. Correct pronunciation and increase in vocabulary will be focused. Learners will become able to use the target language in their practical life as they will develop communicative competence in the target language.WARM UP:At first teacher will come in class, she will start with formal talk either asking students that howare they or asking about their previous day that how was it etc, then she will tell them that theyare going to perform some interesting activity in the class. She can create a mental readiness oflearners for activity and will develop learner’s interest for the activity by talking from general tospecific.Presentation:This is first stage of learning process. Teacher will use a controlled activity at this stage and willplay the role of an informant. Actually the teacher presents something to the learners in acontrolled manner at this stage.TEFL Page 3
  4. 4. COMMUNICATIVE METHOD-COMMUNICATION SKILLSActivity 1:Time: 15 minutesObjective: to start a discussion among students in order to teach how to communicate with oneanother in a target language and how to co-operate with one another while language learning.Material: Handouts, white board, picturesProcedure: teacher will divide the class into groups, each group having maximum 4 or 5members. Then, he will give a handout about cricket to the students having some informationwritten on it related to cricket and then ask them to read that and will write an abstract from thathandout which can be as follows:Pakistan is very likely to win the world cup this year. Italy can win if they play as well asthey have lately. Czechoslovakia probably won’t be a contender. England may have anoutside chance. After that teacher will ask the questions related to that abstract and students will answer thosequestions on the basis of their information gained from handout reading and discussion with eachother. After this activity, teacher will be able to judge that to what extend he has achieved hisgoals set for the same activity.TEFL Page 4
  5. 5. COMMUNICATIVE METHOD-COMMUNICATION SKILLSPractice:This is second stage of learning process and teacher will play a role of a conductor. He will use aguided activity in which he will give some guidance to the students.Activity 2:Time: 15 minutesMaterial: visual aidsObjective: to set an opportunity for students to talk freely and give their ideas and opinions inthe target language for the sake of language understanding and fluency in that language.Procedure: teacher will divide the whole class into small pairs. She will use a picture as visualaid and will give some clues in the sense of guidance to the students as, for the given picture, teacher will say that it is a picture of some forest and different animals are present in that asstudent can see. She will also tell the names of some animals and then ask them to make a storyabout the animals present in the picture. Students will write their stories about picture afterdiscussing in pairs and then will explain them to teacher in the target language.TEFL Page 5
  6. 6. COMMUNICATIVE METHOD-COMMUNICATION SKILLSProduction:At this stage of learning process, teacher will play a role of an advisor or encourager. He will usethe free activity in which students will be depended completely on themselves for each andeverything, teacher will only encourage them.Activity 3:Time: 15 minutesMaterial: two pictures in a relatively big size, apparently similar but having some differences inthem. Objective: to decrease hesitation in speech by giving students confidence to talk freely. Newvocabulary will also be added to student’s language and pronunciation will also be corrected (butteacher will do these two thins at the end).Procedure: In this activity, teacher will divide the students into 5 or 6 groups and will showthem two pictures which are slightly different from each other, and will ask his students toanalyze the differences between the two. Teacher may ask every group to find one differencewhich no other group has found yet. If student will fail to use proper terminologies for the thingspresent in the picture then teacher will tell the exact words used for them and, hence, this willresult in increase in the vocabulary of the learners.TEFL Page 6
  7. 7. COMMUNICATIVE METHOD-COMMUNICATION SKILLSAnother activity can also be used at the same stage in which teacher will show many pictures orcards to the students and ask them to talk about the persons present in the pictures by recognizingtheir particular features which links them to certain specific areas etc. Some pictures, like given below, can be used by teachers for this purpose:TEFL Page 7
  9. 9. COMMUNICATIVE METHOD-COMMUNICATION SKILLSIn conclusion we can say that a teacher, after using certain strategies and giving studentsdifferent practical activities to do within the class, in the end will observe that either the aims orobjectives set in the start of the lesson plan are achieved or not. Secondly, teacher will observethat to what extend he is satisfying or fulfilling the needs of the learners. Thirdly, he will observethat what kind of problems are faced by the learners and what possible ways he can mould in thenext lesson plans , by keeping the previous in front of him, to meet their needs.TEFL Page 9
