    • FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASESaturday, June 22, 2013Contact: Hassan Mufti, Shaheed Bhutto Foundation (SBF)sbfcoms@gmail.comhttp://facebook.com/pages/ShaheedBhuttoFoundation/138424929660655http://twitter.com/SBFPakistanFATA GRAND ASSEMBLY PREPARESCONSENSUS RECOMMENDATIONSPeshawar: The FATA Grand Assembly, organized by the Shaheed Bhutto Foundation (SBF) on June 22, 2013                             at the Pearl Continental in Peshawar brought together more than 300 tribal citizens to reassert that FATA’s                               political mainstreaming must remain a national priority. As the reforms agenda seems to have lost urgency amidst other priorities, FATA elders, representatives of                             political parties, ulemas, lawyers, journalists, students and women from the tribal areas gathered to arrive at                             consensus regarding challenges in the implementation of already enacted political reforms in FATA and on                           recommendations for further reforms. The FATA Grand Assembly was the culmination of a lengthy dialogue and consensusbuilding process spanning                           five years of consecutive local reform council meetings and advocacy workshops. SBF first launched its campaign
    • in 2008 to amplify the voices of FATA citizens and bring about political reforms in the Federally Administered                                 Tribal Areas (FATA).The FATA Grand Assembly began with a welcome address and a brief history of the organization by SBF                                 Chairman Commander (R) M. Khalid Shafi. The Honorable Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Governor Engineer                     Shaukatullah Khan also attended as chief guest, offering his endorsement of the peopledriven reforms                         process in FATA.The Governor Shaukatullah Khan said: “The real problem plaguing the people of FATA is economic                           backwardness. I do accept that the reforms announced in 2011 are far from adequate but it is the first step in the                                         right direction.”While appreciating the efforts of Shaheed Bhutto Foundation (SBF), he said the announced reforms are the                             results of the efforts of FATA parliamentarians and other stakeholders. He said that we went to each and every                                   tehsil in FATA and held dialogues with the people of FATA. He further said that all those who are present here                                       are highly commendable individuals and I recognize almost every single one of you. He also applauded the efforts                                 of late Dr. Syed Kamal, who was the first President of SBF. He said that Dr. Kamal wanted to show his love                                         towards the people of FATA by contributing towards their development and making efforts to give voice to them                                 and empower them to bring about change in the region. The Governor, in the end said Those days are not far,                                       when FATA will be as developed as the rest of Pakistan. In addition, respectable members of the Senate and National Assembly were in attendance. The Grand                           Assemblyan event of and by the peopledrew the participation of over 300 FATA citizens from a cross                               section of society. The FATA Grand Assembly has brought FATA into the limelight while amplifying the voices of its people as they                                   continue to push for change through reforms., Struggling for both political and legal reforms, FATA citizens are                               working to usher in a new era of prosperity in an otherwise sidelined region of Pakistan. The FATA Grand                                   Assembly is a foundation for more concrete developments in this direction as SBF fervently works to organize a                                 FATA Convention wherein a landmark document of consensus recommendations for reforms in FATA will be                           presented to the highest level political authority.###
