Norooz and its Traditions <ul><li>Traditionally goes back approximately 15000 years ago after the end of the last ice age </li></ul><ul><li>Symbolized by King Jamshid </li></ul><ul><li>We get ready for Norooz by: </li></ul><ul><li>Cleaning our houses (Khaneh-Tekani) </li></ul><ul><li>Buying new clothing </li></ul><ul><li>Buying gifts for family and friends </li></ul>

Last Wednesday Chaharshanbeh Souri <ul><li>Celebrated on last Tuesday night </li></ul><ul><li>of the year by jumping over fire. </li></ul><ul><li>Prepares people for a peaceful </li></ul><ul><li>and forgiving New Year. </li></ul><ul><li>The main idea is to get the energy and positive glow from the fire and give all bad feelings to the fire. </li></ul>

Haft-Seen (7 S’s) <ul><li>Haft-Seen means seven items starting with letter “S” such as: </li></ul><ul><li>Sabzeh </li></ul><ul><li>(grown wheat): Rebirth </li></ul><ul><li>Samanu </li></ul><ul><li>(wheat germ pudding): Affluence </li></ul><ul><li>Senjed </li></ul><ul><li>(dried fruit of oleaster tree): Love </li></ul><ul><li>Seer </li></ul><ul><li>(garlic): Good health </li></ul><ul><li>Sib </li></ul><ul><li>(apple): Beauty </li></ul><ul><li>Somag </li></ul><ul><li>(sumac): Color of sunrise </li></ul><ul><li>Serkeh </li></ul><ul><li>(vinegar): Age and patience </li></ul><ul><li>Haft-Seen are put together before the Norooz count down </li></ul>
  7. 8. SeezDeh BeDar, Sizdeh Bedar, Dodging the 13th day of New Year The two weeks long NoRooz celebration ends with SeezDeh Bedar. SeezDeh means Thirteen and SeezDeh Bedar is the process of getting over with or passing over the thirteenth day of the New Year. (Some believe 13 being an unlucky number)
  8. 9. On this day, girls & boys tie a knot with grass and make wishes perhaps for a husband or wife. When the knot is opened (it is beleived that) their luck will open and their wishes will come true. Newly weds also tie a grass knot making wishes for a baby, a house, or whatever is on their Have-To-Have list.

Booyeh eskenâs e tâ nakhordeh lâyeh ketâb The scent of the fresh banknote, (had been) put unbent in the book
