Bolivia’s Death Road

Although a change in the road has made this a bit less dangerous, it is still a hair-raising mountain biking feat and definitely not for the faint of heart. It takes you about 64 km between La Paz and Coroico in the rainforest. It takes you along an unpaved road with plunging drop-offs and no guardrails.

  1. 1. 05 Top 10 South America Adventures Posted by Maureen Santucci - Guest Blogger on 05th, November 2012 Top 10 South America Adventures South America is a fantastic destination for adventure travelling and you can find several options in any country you visit. Here are just ten of the many that should make it on your short list if you plan on travelling there. Inca Trail, Peru There’s no question that the best way to visit Machu Picchu is by hiking into this ancient citadel. And the only way to do that is by taking the 4 day Inca Trail. If you want a route less travelled that will take you to Aguas Calientes, or if no permits are available, try the Salkantay Nature Trail. Both depart from Cusco. Bolivia’s Death Road Although a change in the road has made this a bit less dangerous, it is still a hair-raising mountain biking feat and definitely not for the faint of heart. It takes you about 64 km between La Paz and Coroico in the rainforest. It takes you along an unpaved road with plunging drop-offs and no guardrails. South America Tours | Backpacking South America Popular Peruvian Dishes Torres del Paine, Chile Trekking is a particularly popular activity in South America and one of the best places to do it is Torres del Paine in Chile. You’ll find kilometre after kilometre of trails going through some of the most amazing landscapes anywhere including mountains, turquoise lakes, rivers, glaciers, meadows and more. Plenty of campgrounds available. Mendoza River Rafting, Argentina There’s some great river rafting all over South America and the Mendoza River in Argentina is no exception. You can raft there any time of year but during the summer the rapids are up to Class IV and V. A great activity to combine with

The slow pace allows you to really appreciate the nature around you. Along the way, you can get out and hike around the rainforest or head up into the canopy above. South American Holidays | South America Tours Places To Visit In Argentina Ciudad Perdida (Lost City) Trek, Columbia It’s not so much the city at the end of the trek that makes this one worthwhile as the stunning vistas that you will have along the way. You’ll hike up mountains, through jungle, across rivers and encounter indigenous people as you make the five or six day journey to the ancient site. Starts from Santa Marta on the Caribbean coast. Scuba Diving in the Galapagos Islands, Ecuador If wildlife is your thing, then you have to be interested in a place where there are species that can’t be found anywhere else in the world. To get the best view of all that is to be found here, you can beat diving down to see what lies below the surface. Some cruise ships specialize in diving so those are the ones to look for. Salar de Uyuni, Bolivia In a continent that is renowned for its unusual landscapes, the salt flat of Uyuni has to be one of the most unique. It is the world’s largest and is found at an altitude of 3500 meters above sea level and covers about 12,500 km. Take a bus and then a train from La Paz. Monte Verde Cloud Forest, Costa Rica An ecosystem with a biodiversity reminiscent of the Amazon, this rainforest is located more than 1400 meters above sea level. It is home to more than 100 species of mammals, hundreds of bird species and, of course, a multitude of insects. Of the more than 2500 plant varieties, over 400 are orchids.
