  1. 1. fam’s teleco news (4ªEd.) 1/6 Noticias TIC Julio 2010 1.- Cisco Intros HD Video-Capable Business Tablet Cisco has unveiled Cius, a mobile collaboration business tablet that delivers virtual desktop integration with anywhere, anytime access to the full range of Cisco collaboration and communication applications, including HD video. Cisco Cius is an ultra-portable device weighing just 1.15lbs that extends the productivity benefits of Cisco collaboration applications to a highly secure mobile platform. In addition to full telepresence interoperability, Cisco Cius offers HD video streaming and real-time video, multi-party conferencing, email, messaging, browsing, and the ability to produce, edit and share content stored locally or centrally in the cloud. Based on the Android operating system, Cius is an open platform for communication and collaboration. Through virtual desktop integration, Cisco Cius offers flexible computing options with cloud-based services, providing dramatically lower capital costs and cost-per-user for desktop maintenance. Cius Features: • A lightweight portable business computing tablet offered with an optional HD audio station equipped with a telephone handset speakerphone, HD DisplayPort and USB ports. • A front-mounted 720p HD camera which refreshes at up to 30 frames per second; a seven inch, high-resolution widescreen super VGA touch-target display for real-time and streamed video, and single-button TelePresence interoperability that can be utilized either when the tablet is docked, or being used remotely via WiFi. • A 5-megapixel rear-facing camera that can transmit streaming VGA quality video and capture still images, and dual noise-cancelling microphones for audio conferencing. • An on-board accelerometer readily orients applications for viewing in portrait or landscape modes as the user rotates the device to their preferred viewing orientation. • Supports 802.11 a/b/g/n WiFi for enterprise campus mobility and 3G cellular services when off-campus. 4G services will be available at a later date. Bluetooth and Micro-USB means users can work untethered and share data with a PC. • A detachable and serviceable battery offers eight hours life under normal usage. • Integration with Business Applications 2.- Actualización estándares El Broadband Forum liberó este año la norma o Technical Reports TR- 248 de su grupo de trabajo IPMPLS & Core que define: Test Suite for TDM Services over MPLS http://www.broadband-forum.org/technical/download/TR-248.pdf 3.- LTE Trials Pick up Speed, Says ABI 2011 will be the year when LTE goes live in a big way, as Verizon in the United States and DoCoMo in Japan will begin wide-scale roll-outs by the end of 2010, according to ABI in its report “Wireless Spectrum, Services and Technology Deployment Market Data.” ABI Research analyst Bhavya Khanna wrote, “132 networks have reported trials
  2. 2. fam’s teleco news (4ªEd.) 2/6 or plans to launch LTE commercially, 32 more than the end of 2009. Verizon has also hinted at the availability of LTE-based handsets by May 2009.” “However, don’t expect WiMAX to bow out just yet. Despite setbacks including Russia’s Yota switching to LTE, 188 WiMAX networks are now in trial or commercial operation worldwide. With India’s wireless broadband spectrum auction recently concluded, expect that number to grow in 2011. Clearwire, a WiMAX service provider in the United States, continues to build out its network and add subscribers, buoyed by the launch of a popular WiMAX-capable handset, the HTC EVO 4G.” The threat that WiMAX will face will come from TD-LTE, an alternative technology championed by China and Qualcomm that can operate on the same bandwidth as existing WiMAX networks. If this technology proves successful, it could see several WiMAX operators migrate to the LTE standard. While this battle plays out, incumbent operators cannot afford to ignore their legacy 3G networks. Technology upgrades such as HSPA+ for WCDMA networks are also proving popular, helping incumbents cope with demands for increasing speeds and bandwidth efficiency. As of March 2010, over 41 network operators had trials or commercial launches of HSPA+ networks, including T-Mobile in the United States and Vodafone in Turkey. 4.- Low-cost networked storage option: ATA over Ethernet (AoE) Networked storage started (generally, at least in the open systems world) with Fibre Channel SANs and Ethernet NAS, and it was good. Like Coke and Pepsi we had a couple of easily recognizable alternatives for the common requirement of consolidating storage on a network. The marketing of these networked storage technologies kind of devolved into a “tastes great; less filling” argument, but that’s to be expected. Then iSCSI came out, promising to provide block storage without the complexity (or cost) of Fibre Channel. As Ethernet performance improved, the Fibre Channel folks figured, if you can’t beat them, join them, and Fibre Channel over Ethernet (FCoE) and Fibre Channel over IP (FCIP) came out as ways to extend Fibre Channel over Ethernet, using the IP protocol. Now there’s another option, one that’s going in the other direction, providing simple storage networking using Ethernet cabling but not the IP protocol. It’s called ATA over Ethernet (AoE), and it’s worth a look. ATA, or Advanced Technology Attachment, is the system PC motherboards use to communicate with hard drives. It eliminated the disk controller card, putting its function into the hard disk drive’s interface itself with the most common version being Serial ATA, or SATA. ATA over Ethernet basically replaces the ribbon cable motherboard connection ATA drives had with an Ethernet cable. Unlike iSCSI, which encapsulates SCSI commands into IP packets and routes them over a LAN or the Internet, ATA over Ethernet doesn’t use IP addresses or IP packets but instead uses MAC addresses to identify the target device. It also uses the lighter ATA protocol instead of SCSI. AoE packets do pass through an Ethernet switch but at a “layer” below the IP protocol, so they’re not routable. It’s essentially a direct connection between a server and a disk drive, just like it was when the drive was physically inside the server. AoE provides a very inexpensive technology for creating networked storage. It’s open source, but vendors do support it in storage arrays. For VARs, it can be a low-cost
  3. 3. fam’s teleco news (4ªEd.) 3/6 alternative to iSCSI or just another point of interest to generate appointments. ATA over Ethernet may be that disruptive solution you need to get into an account that’s buying storage from another VAR By Eric Slack, SearchStorage.com 5.- Innovadores Nacionales: UBICUOS La feria Computex se ha convertido en una pasarela donde distintos computadores tableta buscan enfrentar al iPad, de Apple.
