    • Tips for taxi driver Taxi drivers transport passengers from one location to another for a fee. Taxi drivers transport people for a fee from one destination to another. Most taxi drivers work in major cities or metropolitan areas. They must know their way around the city and its surrounding area, although many cabs today are equipped with navigational devices. Taxi drivers are paid in several ways, most often depending on a taximeter that calculates the distance and the fare. Taxi drivers generate business by responding to taxi company dispatches, recognizing the hand signals of someone hailing the cab from the curb and answering a phone call or a computer message. How Taxi driver Are Paido Fares are calculated many ways depending on the city. Some cabs have taximeters that base fares on distance and time. They are turned on when passengers tell the taxi driver their destination and enter the taxi and is turned off when the passenger arrives at his destination. Fares might be calculated by neighborhood zones. Another way fare might be calculated is a flat rate. Some taxi drivers charge extra fares at night and for carrying luggage and additional passengers. Taxi drivers might get tips depending on how well they served the passengers. 47
    • How Taxi driver Get Customerso Taxi drivers stop to would-be passengers hand signals, respond to radio dispatches, phone calls and computer messages. They also respond to phone calls from the actual cab company. Passengers are also found at such places as hotels, airports, bus and train stations. Day-to-Day Responsibilitieso Taxi drivers perform vehicle inspections before they get on the road. Inspections include making sure brakes and tail lights are working properly and fuel levels are appropriate. Most drivers are employed by a transportation company, and they start their shift by reporting to the taxi garage for vehicle pickup. They make sure the inside and outside of the vehicle are clean and odor-free. Taxi drivers also fill out daily activity logs, which must be accurately updated with every client. The vehicle log must include passengers names (if they called the cab company), destination and total fare. Travel Deviceso Taxi drivers are usually equipped with a map of the surrounding area and a navigational device. He 48
    • will drive a company vehicle during his shift, but this vehicle remains at thecompany parking lot or is used by other drivers between his shifts.Since a cab company generally operates 24/7, a drivers shift may start at anyhour of the day. Shifts may be longer or shorter than the standard 8 hours, depending on the scheduling needs of the company.Taxi drivers are often expected to wear a company uniform while working. Its also a good idea for drivers to devote sometime in the morning tomaintaining a neat personal appearance.Earning MoneyWhile some taxi drivers are employed by companies at an hourly wage (withthe company collecting all cab fares at the end of the day), the industrystandard is for drivers to work as independent contractors. Independent cabdrivers pay a lease fee to the company for each shift that they work, then keepall cab fares and tips that they receive from passengers. In return, thecompany will dispatch assignments to drivers based on calls received fromcustomers requesting rides. This dispatching is done through a radio that eachdriver has in his or her cab.The lease arrangement can be a blessing or a curse for a driver, depending onhow much business there is on a given day. A busy day can yield huge profits, whereas a slow day can be a day where a driver must pay the company towork. For this reason, a cab driver spends his day hoping for many runs andlong runs and is authorized to spend time between dispatched runs seekingflag fares--passengers who physically signal to a passing taxi for a pickuprather than calling in for a ride.Taking PassengersWhen a driver is actually taking a passenger, he makes money from a basecharge, then by running a meter for the length of the ride. This metermeasures the number of miles the car is running and charges a rate perfraction of a mile. If the car is caught in traffic, some cabs have meters that 49
    • will switch to a timed charge rather than a distance charge. Lease drivers maychoose to turn off a meter early for a fare, since the money is being paid tothem.A taxi driver must have a good understanding of local geography and haveexcellent navigational skills. It is also helpful if he can spend some of the ridetime making pleasant conversation with the passengers.Codes, Regulations and RecordsA cab driver must follow a series of codes and regulations during his day, aswell as adhere to certain record-keeping practices. Codes includecommunication codes (numbers) that are spoken to dispatch agents to indicatecertain situations, like taking a run, bathroom break, free for a run andcompleting a shift.Regulations must be followed involving conduct with passengers, chargingpassengers and traffic and safety considerations. At the end of the day, the driver must turn in a record of his day, includinginformation about how many passengers he had, where he drove and whatfees were charged. The cab company uses this information to make decisionsabout how they continue to run their business, such as determining how manycabs should be running in certain areas at certain times and whether or notmore drivers should be contracted.Read more: How Does a Taxi Cab Driver Spend a Workday? |eHow.com http://www.ehow.com/how-does_4700628_taxi-cab-driver-spend-workday.html#ixzz1e3FW4q5h 50
