1. 1. PRESENTATION ON WIKI BY FABULOUS FOUR

KRISHNA MOHAN GUNDAVARAPU

JAYESH NARANI

ANIL KUMAR TODU

PUVVADI KISHORE

 2. 2. Wiki-Definition “ Wiki is a piece of server software that allows users to freely create and edit Web page content using any Web browser. Wiki supports hyperlinks and has a simple text syntax for creating new pages and crosslinks between internal pages on the fly” -WARD CUNNINGHAM
 3. 3. EVOLUTION

Wiki was first designed and

developed by Ward cunnigham in 1995

The first Wiki site was developed for portland pattern repository which creates web pages using pattern languages

The word wiki was named after the wikiwiki(quick) shuttle that runs between terminals in honolulu airport

WikiWikiWeb was the first site to be called a wiki

 4. 4. Need of Wiki

While creating web pages for intranet, it was difficult for the web developers to link pages, navigate and edit them because no other technology was adapted then except using basic htmls

Wiki supports all the features of editing linking, navigating and even supports creating new pages by users which it acceptable and adaptable since then

 5. 5. Features of Wiki

Editing web pages

Linking and creating pages

Navigating

Information on pages will be accurate and dynamic

Information is safe and secure thus allowing integrity of data

 6. 6. Access levels of wiki

There are certain levels

Of working access in wiki

Only the people working with the project can access wiki

Communication through links by embedding them in the common collaboration pages

Open to people to view and edit

All these access permissions

can be done trough proper

Authentication

 7. 7. Types of Wikis

There are several types of wikis based on the scripting language you choose to create the web page

The most commonly used scripting wikis are java based, java script

based, perl based,

php based,p2p wikis

Php wikis are used

on server systems and

p2p wikis are used to

connect web pages to

external web pages

 8. 8. Importing data and Hyperlinking

Data Importation is one of the key feature of wiki thorugh which we can get data from external source.

eg:if user need a piece of information from wikipedia s/he can access and get the info to your web page.one example of this is Universal Wiki converter which imports and converts the data into the format required

Using wikis we can also connect to the web pages that’s out of our domain by using hyperlink technology

eg:if the user wants to visit google s/he will be automatically redirected by clicking the link which is embedded in the web page

 9. 9. Transparency in wikis

Transparency is a key feature which allows communication among web pages and their collaboration

Transparency means a system after change’s been made supports its previous framework changing its internal behaviour for which the change is made

In general transparency is making the change invisible and allowing the user access to the facility for which the change’s done

 10. 10. ADVANTAGES OF WIKI

OPEN EDITING

ITS EASE TO ACCES AND EDIT WEB PAGES

CAN KEEP TRACK OF ALL THE

UPDATIONS MADE

PEOPLE CAN COMMUNICATE FROM DIFFERENT LOCATIONS

NON TECHNICAL USERS MAY

ALSO EASILY ACCESS

AND EDIT THE WEBPAGES

 11. 11. DISADVANTAGES OF WIKI

ITS OPENNESS may give a chance to each and every one to edit thus resulting in non integration of data

No programming can be done on wiki pages

Unstructured

Its flexibility cause information disorganised

 12. 12. CONCLUSION

WIKIS ARE VERY GOOD AND QUICK IN COMMUNICATION WHEN COMPARED TO EMAIL COLLABORATION in a corporate intranet
