THIS NEW MARKET HAS A HUGE GROWTH POTENTIAL CASE STUDY Connecting Riders with Drivers in a Click of a button By launching a mobile application that allows people to request a driver with just a click of a button, Uber has basically created an API between cars and users, through their smartphones. Using their API, a new niche market was opened and a $3.5 billion company was born. Now Uber is thought to make ~$1 billion in gross bookings1. After the 80% cut to drivers, this is about $200 million in revenue each year. Currently 23 million cars on the road are connected to the Internet in some manner, by 2020 its expected that 152 million cars will be connected.2 In the next 5 years, this industry is projected to grow at a rate of 35% to $132 billion.3 How much economic impact would be created by a company that creates an API for paying gas? THAT’S WHY EVERY BIG PLAYER IS ON IT CAR MANUFACTURERS Ford Developers Program Launched in 2013, the program allows developers to incorporate SYNC connectivity and AppLink API into their smartphone applications. GM Developer Portal In 2013, GM started their own developer program with SDK for In-Vehicle apps and remote APIS for cloud based access. TELECOM Tesla Motors Tesla is building their cars focusing on the driver experience and has partnered with AT&T to improve it and enable remote diagnostics & maintenance. AT&T Drive Studio AT&T is the first carrier that opened a research center dedicated to connected car innovation. Sprint Velocity Sprint’s Velocity platform allows car manufacturers to simplify the development process and easily integrate complex components to their cars. SOFTWARE Verizon Verizon’s Telematic solution offers a set of connected service that improve safety, security, and in-car entertainment options. Google They teamed up with GM, Honda, Audi, and other car manufacturers to bring Android operating systems to connected cars. Apple They are working to bring iOS to connected cars.
