  2. 2. Mary’s life·∙    An active 76 year old!·∙    Enjoys hiking, running, biking!·∙    Regularly walks her dog!·∙    Plays with her grandchildren!·∙    An avid gardener! But Mary’s hip is causing her extreme pain and her doctor recommends hip replacement surgery.!
  3. 3. What is Hip Replacement Surgery? Hip replacements are performed more often than any other orthopaedic surgery in the United States. There are two basic components: ! The stem • Stem piece that anchors to the femur bone.! The cup • Cup piece that anchors inside the socket of the acetabulum.!
  4. 4. Hip Replacement FailureHip replacement failure can occur when there is a design flaw or when the device isimproperly implanted.! What are the symptoms of Hip Replacement Failure?! Mary’s symptoms included:! Groin pain! Thigh pain! Irritation and/or pain Inability to bear weight! walking! Limp! Chronic ache! And metallosis . . .!

After receiving her first implant, Mary’s metal-on-metal implant caused her extreme pain, swelling, bone deterioration and metal toxicity.!
