Following up our presentation from yesterday, we show you now how to create an XP machine within your Linux, Mac or Windows box to test out old programs. This is considered a beginners guide and How-To.
How to create an XP VM with VirtualBox for Windows

Create a Windows XP sandbox
installation on your Windows 7 PC!
2. To create an XP VM, you will need:
• ….VirtualBox installed on your computer (see Part 1
of this guide for instructions)
• ….A Windows XP installation disc (ISO format) and
valid license key.
• … about one hour of spare time.
3. Create an XP VM in VirtualBox - Step 1:
• Launch VirtualBox using the shortcut
• Click NEW to create a new VM.
• Click NEXT when the
Wizard appears:
4. Create an XP VM in VirtualBox - Step 2:
• Enter a NAME for your
XP VM, then click NEXT.
• The default Memory
of 192mb is fine. Click
NEXT.
5. Create an XP VM in VirtualBox - Step 3:
• Check the Boot Hard Disk
option.
• Select Create new hard
disk.
• Click NEXT, then NEXT
again.
6. Create an XP VM in VirtualBox - Step 4:
• Next, you must set the type of the VM hard
disk.
• It is recommended
to choose Dynamically
Expanding Storage.
• Click NEXT to continue.
7. Create an XP VM in VirtualBox - Step 5:
• Set the maximum size of the virtual disk in GB.
The default is 10GB, which should be fine for
normal usage.
• Click NEXT.
• Click FINISH. The VM appears in your list
within VirtualBox.
• Right-click it and
Choose Settings.
8. Create an XP VM in VirtualBox - Step 6:
• Select Storage.
• Click the CD icon with the
green plus symbol.
• Select Choose Disk, then
select your Windows XP ISO
file.
9. Create an XP VM in VirtualBox - Step 7:
• The Windows XP ISO should be shown in the
list of Storage Devices:
• If so, click OK.
• Right-click the XP VM and
choose Start.
10. Create an XP VM in VirtualBox - Step 8:
• The VM launches and begins the Windows XP installation
process:
• Follow the on-screen prompts for a typical Windows XP
installation, including entering your license key.
11. Create an XP VM in VirtualBox - Step 9:
• After installation is complete, your XP VM is
ready to use.
• To shut it down, click
Machine > ACPI Shutdown.
• To relaunch the VM, open VirtualBox and
choose the Start option for the XP VM!
12. Now you have a Windows XP Virtual
Machine!
• Use it for testing
• Or installing software you are not sure about
• Or just for fun and nostalgia!

13. Additional: want to clone your XP VM?
• Now you have a base XP VM, you can create
copies of it.
• Right-click the XP VM and choose Clone.
• You now have two
XP VMs!
