What we did
We measure companies’ online activities using The Social Media Balance Sheet™ to deliver a single snapshot of a company’s social media activity.
We carried out research to determine the social media being actively used (within the last 2 months) using our Social Media Balance Sheet™ of 10 of the FTSE 100 companies chosen at random.
Introduction
The companies reviewed were:
Lloyds Banking Group PLC
Vodafone Group Plc
Royal Bank of Scotland Group PLC
BP Plc
National Grid Plc
Barclays PLC
BT Group PLC
Income & Growth VCT
HSBC Holdings PLC
Prudential Plc
Social media tools used by companies reviewed
The most popular social media tools used were Twitter and Facebook
Social media uses in this group
Those using social media use it for the following:
Customer care
Recruiting
To inform / build brand awareness
To gather information / research
To hold competitions
To provide product demos
Conclusions
Our initial conclusions as to the
social media being used are:
Twitter and Facebook are the most popular.
Blogging and photo sharing is not popular.
Financial services are the lowest users of social media.
The Future
Over the next 5 years social media tools will change our business models yet these giant corporations are largely ignoring its potential.
One of the challenges is that failure to adopt social media may result in others (detractors, campaigners) taking your share of the voice and controlling your message.
