  • 2.  History has to do with the thought and action of men and women who lived in the past.  Historian works in the past; he explores the past in order to find out what men and women did and though of the past.  His business is to discover and set forth the facts of history.
  • 3. Historical Facts Where is the historical fact? When is the historical fact? What is the historical fact?
  • 4. What is the Historical Fact? In December 1897, Aguinaldo and 25 other revolutionary leaders went on voluntary exile in Hong Kong.
  • 5.  Because this simple statement, only a symbol, is a generalization of many simple facts and this generalization itself cannot be use apart from the wider facts and generalizations which it symbolizes. What he can deal with directly is a statement about the event, a statement which affirms that the fact that the event occurred •.
  • 6. What is the Historical Fact? The historical fact is not the past event, but a symbol, a simple statement which enables us to recreate it imaginatively. Next
  • 7. Where is the Historical Fact? The historical fact is in his mind, or in somebody’s mind or they are nowhere.
  • 8. Ninoy Aquino was assassinated at the Manila International Airport on 21st August 1983.
  • 9.  Ninoy is not being assassinated now MIA. The actual event is gone forever. Yet this is precisely the sort of thing the historian is concerned with. These vanished realities give place to pale reflection, impalpable images or ideas and this thing that cannot be touched or handled are all that is left of the actual occurrence - the facts.
  • 10. . In a sense, they are also in the records, in the sources. But if no one in this world who could make any meaning out of it, this would cease to be a historical fact. Historical fact makes a difference only because it is in human minds. Next
  • 11. When is the Historical Fact? If the historical fact is present imaginatively in someone’s mind, then it is now a part of the present.
  • 12. Think of the Katipunan meeting on the 23rd of August 1896 at Pugadlawin. The image is partly of things done in the past and partly of things to be done in the future; but it is more or less all in one image now present in the mind. Next

  • 15. 1. There is no possibility that the historian can present in its entirety any actual event, even the simplest.
  • 16. 2. The historian cannot eliminate the personal equation.
  • 17. 3. No one can profit by historical research, or not much, unless he does some for himself.
  • 18. 4. Every normal person does know some history.
  • 19. 5. The kind of history that has most influence upon the life of the community and the course of events is the history common men carry around in their heads.
