Desc: From April 2-4, 2009, 71 health professional students from Uganda, Kenya, Rwanda, Burundi and the United States came together to attend the first ever East Africa Health & Human Rights Leadership Institute, organized by Physicians for Human Rights and the Action Group for Health, Human Rights and HIV/AIDS. For three days students increased their knowledge and awareness of health, human rights and advocacy, and built their capacity to advocate for health rights on their campuses and in their communities. Students discussed—from their perspectives—the major health and human rights challenges in their home countries, shared their experiences in advocacy, built key advocacy skills and identified a way forward for their health rights advocacy in the future.
