The RSPCA was first formed as the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals by a group of 22 reformers in the UK in 1824. It was the first Animal Welfare Charity to be founded in the world. RSPCA Australia was formed in Victoria in 1871 .etc.....Other states soon followed in forming an RSPCA, with the latest member being the Northern Territory in 1965.
The RSPCA mainly depends on the thousands of volunteers that work in shelters to keep it running. There are approximately 7780 volunteers working for the RSPCA. These volunteers outnumber the paid staff by about 7-1. Many qualified staff are also required to aid the RSPCA, such as Veterinarians and Scientists.
The National President of RSPCA is currently Lynne Bradshaw. There is also a President of RSPCA in each state. The CEO is Heather Neil and the Chief Scientist is Dr. Bidda Jones.
The RSPCA depends on donations as its main source of raising money. It also holds many fundraisers such as the Million Paws Walk, which won the best charity or cause-related event at the 2010 event awards, a cupcake day, and a happy tails day. The RSPCA also has a range of merchandise which it sells to the public to support its animals. Most recently, the RSPCA organised a Queensland Flood Appeal to help the many animals affected by floods.
RSPCA is a member of the larger organisation WSPA, which has location all over the world. Locally, RSPCA Victoria’s head office is located in Burwood East, which is also the largest shelter in Victoria.
