  • 1. Types of Chemical Reactions
  • 2.
    • Synthesis Reaction- when 2 or more substances combine to form a new substance.
    • Ex:
    • Na + Cl -> NaCl
    • Mg + O -> MgO
  • 3.
    • Decomposition Reaction- when 1 substance breaks down into 2 or more simpler substances.
    • Ex:
    • NaCl -> Na + Cl
    • MgO -> Mg + O
  • 4.
    • 3. Single-replacement Reaction -when 1 element replaces another in a compound.
    • Na +1 Cl -1 + K +1 -> K +1 Cl -1 + Na +1
    • Compound Element Compound Element
  • 5.
    • 4. Double-Replacement Reaction- when the positive ions of the compounds switch with each other to make 2 new compounds.
    • Na +1 Cl -1 +Li +1 F -1 -> Li +1 Cl -1 + Na +1 F -1
  • 6.
    • Exothermic Reaction- a reaction where some form of energy (in the form of heat) is given off by the reaction.
    • -There is an increase in temperature.
  • 7.
    • Endothermic Reaction- a reaction where energy must be provided for the reaction to take place.
    • -There is an decrease in temperature.
