4 types of chemical reactions

 1. 1. Types of Chemical Reactions
 2. 2.

Synthesis Reaction- when 2 or more substances combine to form a new substance.

Ex:

Na + Cl -> NaCl

Mg + O -> MgO

 3. 3.

Decomposition Reaction- when 1 substance breaks down into 2 or more simpler substances.

Ex:

NaCl -> Na + Cl

MgO -> Mg + O

 4. 4.

3. Single-replacement Reaction -when 1 element replaces another in a compound.

Na +1 Cl -1 + K +1 -> K +1 Cl -1 + Na +1

Compound Element Compound Element

 5. 5.

4. Double-Replacement Reaction- when the positive ions of the compounds switch with each other to make 2 new compounds.

Na +1 Cl -1 +Li +1 F -1 -> Li +1 Cl -1 + Na +1 F -1

 6. 6.

Exothermic Reaction- a reaction where some form of energy (in the form of heat) is given off by the reaction.

-There is an increase in temperature.

 7. 7.

Endothermic Reaction- a reaction where energy must be provided for the reaction to take place.

-There is an decrease in temperature.
