Everyone loves a good movie. Movie has taken a huge part in our lives. Movie
can be categorized intomany genres. It is simple to define each genre by its own without
being complicated by the use of image and narrative arcs that films lend to it. As time
pass, many more new genres are introduced as a result of technology advancement.
Animated film is one fine example. Animated film is a collection of illustrations
photographed frame by frame and then display in a rapid succession. Due to this unique
feature, animated films are noticeably easier to be recognized. Most of the animated
films share similar characteristic.
Animated films are mostly designed for young age demographic. Hence, they
possess certain traits that make it more children-friendly. They are often fused with
comedy and romance genre. Comedic scenes and conversations are very popular.
Exaggerated actions that make people laugh to their hearts content can be easily
spotted in two animation movie – “Brave” and “Tangled”. In “Brave”, Merida’s triplet
brothers constantly pull off pranks and comedic mistake. Meanwhile, the hostile
interaction between Maximus, then palace horse and Flynn accompanied with a tacit
understanding has given “Tangled” a lot of laughing points. Another frequent trait in
animation movies is the bizarre proportion and shape of the characters. This feature is
instrumental in attracting attention and creating comedic stunt at the same time.
Animation that targeted children and teenagers as their audience more often than
not depicts their inner psychology to create an empathy link with them. In “Brave”, the
main character, Merida was forced to marriage by her mother and ran away from home
as an act of rebellion. It mirrors the rebellious self in the youngsters that are always
made to obey their parents. However, this is not everything. In the end, Merida went on
adventure with her mother and they were able to understand each other better. Their
bond grew even stronger as they realize the importance of each other in their lives.
Albeit rebellious, at the end of the day, the youngsters only wish for their mother’s love
and understanding. This movie was a hit because it reflects the youngsters’ deepest
desire, especially the female audience. “Tangled” is a different story. The story is
aboutRapunzel, a girl trapped in a tower, never having a chance to witness the world
beyond the tower. One day, Rapunzel stumbled across a stranger, Flynn who took her
to an adventure in the outside world. In the movie, Rapunzel let go of her adventurous
and playful self that was keep in her all these time and she was finally able to fall in love.
This is another scenario that most youngsters wish for – explore the world, let loose of
their wild alter ego and fall in love.
Both “Brave” and Rapunzel” also explore the fantasy world with fictional storyline
that distant away from reality. Witchery was found in “Brave” when Merida got a portion
from a witch that claims to solve her problem. Rapunzel in “Tangled” possessed
supernatural power that can reverse time. In these movies, human and animals
communications were also made possible. Merida talks to her horse which returns
responses and Rapunzel talks to Maximus, the palace horse which tries to adore her.
Animals are given human characteristics. By watching the movies, the audience is able
to stand in the characters’ shoes and experience things that are impossible in real life.
Even if it is just an imagination, they are able to escape into the world built of dream to
relieve their frustration on the contradicted reality.
As a movie that targets the younger generation, most animated films try their
hardest to inspire the youth towards a better path. They play a part to educate the
young generation by instill positive attitude and lesson in the movies. “Brave” teach
people to stand up for what ones believe and never give up without compromising
others, especially the female community. The stereotype of weaker female is broken in
this movie. It also made people realize the importance of our parents and we should
appreciate and love them. “Tangled” encourage people to explore the world without fear
of failure and always strive to achieve our dreams. All these inspiring messages contain
in the movie is a distinct trait in animated films and they are conveyed in an interesting
manner that people are remind of the message when they see the film again.
Ever since the birth of animated film, there is much discussion on whether
animation is a genre or a medium. The argument that animation is a medium because
of the technique used to produce an animation is basically the same and they all display
fantasy storyline. However, not all fantasy stories are film in animation, for instance,
“Avengers” which is film in live actions. Animation is made a genre because it targets a
specific audience group and possess traits that strength its attraction towards this
specific group. The distinct trait made it stand alone as a genre.
