  2. 2. Where I come from <ul><li>I come from the United States of America (USA). </li></ul><ul><li>The USA is in North America. </li></ul><ul><li>It is next to Canada and Mexico. </li></ul><ul><li>The USA is made up for 50 states. </li></ul>
  3. 3. American Money <ul><li>American money is called the dollar. One dollar is divided into 100 cents. </li></ul><ul><li>American money has pictures of US presidents and other important American figures. </li></ul><ul><li>American coins have their own names: </li></ul><ul><li>1¢=penny, 5¢=nickel, 10¢=dime, 25¢=quarter </li></ul>
  4. 4. My State <ul><li>My state is called North Carolina (NC). </li></ul><ul><li>It is on the east coast of the USA. </li></ul><ul><li>It became a state in 1789. </li></ul><ul><li>NC has a subtropical climate. </li></ul>
  5. 5. State Flag <ul><li>North Carolina´s flag is red, white, and blue. It has the same colors as the US flag. </li></ul><ul><li>The flag has one white star on it. </li></ul>
  6. 6. Raleigh, the State Capital <ul><li>The capital of North Carolina is called Raleigh. </li></ul><ul><li>Raleigh was named after Sir Walter Raleigh, an English explorer. </li></ul><ul><li>Raleigh is in the center of North Carolina. </li></ul>
  7. 7. 3 Regions of North Carolina <ul><li>North Carolina is divided into 3 parts: The coast, the piedmont, and the mountains. </li></ul><ul><li>The coast is the area that is close to the Atlantic Ocean. </li></ul><ul><li>The piedmont is in the center of North Carolina. </li></ul><ul><li>The mountains are in the west of North Carolina. </li></ul>

  9. 9. Roanoke Island <ul><li>North Carolina had the first colony in the USA. </li></ul><ul><li>It was called Roanoke. </li></ul><ul><li>The people who lived in Roanoke disappeared and what happened to them is still a mystery. </li></ul>

Kitty Hawk <ul><li>In the early 1900s, the Wright Brothers created the first airplane. </li></ul><ul><li>The flew planes in Kitty Hawk, NC because of the regular winds and the soft sand. </li></ul><ul><li>Now there is a national monument where the Wright Brothers flew their planes. </li></ul>
  11. 11. North Carolina Battleship <ul><li>This battleship is called the USS North Carolina. </li></ul><ul><li>It was used during World War II. </li></ul><ul><li>It is in Wilmington. </li></ul><ul><li>The battleship is now a museum. </li></ul>

  13. 13. Old Salem <ul><li>Old Salem was first settled by people from the Czech Republic. </li></ul><ul><li>Old Salem now has a living history museum, a toy museum, and gardens to visit. </li></ul>
  14. 14. Charlotte <ul><li>Charlotte is the biggest city in North Carolina. </li></ul><ul><li>Charlotte is an important city for NASCAR, a car race on a track. </li></ul>
  15. 15. North Carolina Zoo in Asheboro <ul><li>The zoo has more than 200 types of animals. </li></ul><ul><li>It has animals from Africa and North America. </li></ul><ul><li>NC zoo was the first American zoo to put animals in areas that are similar to their natural habitat. </li></ul>

The Great Smoky Mountains <ul><li>The Smoky Mountains get their name from the fog that is there. </li></ul><ul><li>The highest place is called Clingmans dome and it is 2.025 meters high. </li></ul><ul><li>The Smoky Mountains are home to many plants and animals, like black bears, deer, and salamanders. </li></ul>
  18. 18. Grandfather Mountain <ul><li>Grandfather Mountain has a swinging bridge that is 1 mile (1.610 mts) high. </li></ul><ul><li>Grandfather Mountains has a festival of Scottish games, called the Highland games, each year. </li></ul>
  19. 19. The Biltmore House <ul><li>The Biltmore House is the biggest home in America. It has 250 rooms. </li></ul><ul><li>The house has an indoor swimming pool, a bowling alley, and a library. </li></ul><ul><li>The Biltmore House has a large garden with 250 types of roses. </li></ul>
  20. 20. Sports in North Carolina <ul><li>NC has some professional sports teams. </li></ul><ul><li>There is a football team called the Carolina Panthers. In the USA, American football is different from Spanish football. </li></ul><ul><li>NC has a hockey team called the Hurricanes. </li></ul><ul><li>NC has a basketball team called the Charlotte Bobcats. </li></ul>
  21. 21. Food in North Carolina <ul><li>A popular food in NC is called barbecue. It is made of pulled pork and has a sauce made of vinegar and tomato. </li></ul><ul><li>Grits are very typical in NC. They are made of ground corn. Some people add butter, salt, or cheese. </li></ul>
  22. 22. Traditional Music from North Carolina <ul><li>The traditional music from NC is called Bluegrass. </li></ul><ul><li>It is typically played with a banjo (see photo), an istrument similar to a guitar. </li></ul><ul><li>Bluegrass is a type of country music that started in the 1940s. </li></ul>
