    • 1 Eucalyptus 3.1 Overview Greg DeKoenigsberg VP, Community© 2012 Eucalyptus Systems, Inc.
    • What shall we talk about today? "Why private cloud?" and, "why AWS compatibility?" and, finally, •"why does open source matter?" © 2012 Eucalyptus Systems, Inc.
    • But first: a little about you. :) Poll questions, please! © 2012 Eucalyptus Systems, Inc.
    • Why Private Cloud? (or, "The Sysadmins Lament") © 2012 Eucalyptus Systems, Inc.
    • Sometimes your users just need cloud. Even if you need to provide it to them. © 2012 Eucalyptus Systems, Inc.
    • Being a private cloud means: Dynamic • Self-service • Metered • Private (duh) • © 2012 Eucalyptus Systems, Inc.
    • Why AWS Compatibility? (or, "why APIs do actually matter, a lot") © 2012 Eucalyptus Systems, Inc.
    • blah blah blah APIs blah blah blah © 2012 Eucalyptus Systems, Inc.
    • AWS Compatibility...means having access to the overwhelmingly dominant public cloud ecosystem.Oh, and not having AWS Compatibility means building your own ecosystem. Which is crazy hard. © 2012 Eucalyptus Systems, Inc.
    • Sharing the same ecosystem ...means that hybrid cloud becomes a real possibility instead of a pipe dream. The same APIs, same machine image formats, samemanagement tools -- all this makes it easier to move workloads from public to private, or vice versa. © 2012 Eucalyptus Systems, Inc.
    • How compatible are we with AWS? euca2ools is a python client for talking to the Amazon API. We wrote it. Its so good that Amazon hired the guy who wrote it. © 2012 Eucalyptus Systems, Inc.
    • AWS-Eucalyptus partnership We now work together to continue to improve API compatibility between AWS and Eucalyptus. © 2012 Eucalyptus Systems, Inc.
    • Why does open source matter? © 2012 Eucalyptus Systems, Inc.
    • Open source is a development modelfor user-driven innovation. Not consortium driven. Not industry driven. User driven. © 2012 Eucalyptus Systems, Inc.
    • Why open source actually works 8defects 0 0 a few a few more a good many hundreds! developers © 2012 Eucalyptus Systems, Inc.
    • Why open source actually works $$$ 8 the open source advantage: usersdefects who improve the product 0 0 a few a few more a good many hundreds! developers © 2012 Eucalyptus Systems, Inc.
    • Open source doesnt always work. users potential developers (Example: OpenOffice) © 2012 Eucalyptus Systems, Inc.
    • But sometimes it works really well! potential users developers contributors! (Example: Apache... and Eucalyptus!) © 2012 Eucalyptus Systems, Inc.
    • The BIG accomplishment for Eucalyptus 3.1 We are now running like a true open source project. © 2012 Eucalyptus Systems, Inc.
    • Eucalyptus 3.1: Use the source, Luke! Get the source at: github.com/eucalyptus/eucalyptus Fork it, hack it, send us a merge request. © 2012 Eucalyptus Systems, Inc.
    • Eucalyptus 3.1: See the roadmap. All bugs and all features are at: eucalyptus.atlassian.net © 2012 Eucalyptus Systems, Inc.
