Pax Digitalis a personal vision of the future. 101010 industrial era ends .111111 digital era begins

  1. 1. Pax Digitalis From Web of Objects to Directories of the Future Eduard Tric, 子連れ狼 , Salamandre Stratégies European Commission, Bruxelles 18th of October 2010
  2. 2. 1 SalamandreStratégiesforEuropeanCommission-october2010 Abstract Highlights will be brought up on issues such as neutrality, safety and accountability of Internet, with case studies on the functioning of DNS directory, Visa country codes directory, the SWIFT system, the recognition of Electronic Certification Authorities. The current digital world is in search of a profound transformation, on the way to evolve from a heterogeneous communications network towards the Web of Things. Directories are at the heart of internet governance. Future directories will arise as m to n matrix. How will the Internet of the Future look like? The answer can be drawn up, although not fully revealed, through a few case studies: the Directories of the future, the Amortization of the financial value of virtual objects, Use value versus Patrimonial value, Intellectual property of Objects, Evolution of ICANN, Use of electronic passports and signatures in an anonymous digital world. A solution is presented as a possible fp7 project : Virtual Pantheon
  3. 3. 2 SalamandreStratégiesforEuropeanCommission-october2010 About Salamandre - Nutrisco et extingo - Prospective and strategy on European souveragnity -We never disclosed strategies publically so far -The international context pushed us to act as citizens, disclose and disseminate probona information and strategy : Salamandre's doctrine for the digital age : Pax Digitalia
  4. 4. 3 SalamandreStratégiesforEuropeanCommission-october2010 The context 000000 Hunter era 001100 Agricultural era 110011 Industrial era 101010 Digital era 111111 We are at the dawn of a new era, the digital era, that will last until the rise of the Biotech era.
  5. 5. 4 SalamandreStratégiesforEuropeanCommission-october2010 Triple War Bad news : we are in the middle of a triple war - Geographical war - Technological war : digital age against industrial age - industrial, petrol based civilization is dying - digital, energy-based civilization is arising - War against ourselves - for the first time in history, actual generation is in danger of living shorter and age in worse conditions than our ancestors - social security and health systems will collapse even in the most advanced economies
  6. 6. 5 SalamandreStratégiesforEuropeanCommission-october2010 Positionning The other continents are moving, trying to reposition themselves (economist picture), in order to achieve Leadership for the next 50 years. Europe has to choose between ACTING and REPOSITIONING NOW and win peacefully, imposing the civilization model for the next age or STAY PASSIVE, acting in the wrong direction and loose, having to follow other models.
  7. 7. 6 SalamandreStratégiesforEuropeanCommission-october2010 Cycles and Spirals Good news: We, Europeans, are celebrating today 2000 years from Pax Romana We , Europeans, have created the tools to achieve peaceful leadership and prosperity by education and technological advantage - private actions - educate young generation “Sportacus Lazy Town style" - public research is a major tool and, of course, FP7 “Network of the Future" is the most visionary, geekest and coolest one :) - peaceful and fruitful collaboration with other continents : Eurolatis (latin america), India, China, Africa at R&D and reconstruction level
  8. 8. 7 SalamandreStratégiesforEuropeanCommission-october2010 THE question for EU Are we going to succeed in the long term ? EE biggest sucess: mobile telecom EU most recent public R&D success : Nobel prize as output of an FP6 project EU as desperate follower : GALILEO Complete EU failures : Search engine ... and many others , among them EU-funded projects
  9. 9. 8 SalamandreStratégiesforEuropeanCommission-october2010 Yes we do Can we, Europeans, afford a future failure ? - Network of the future is a major R7d and infrastructure challenge, it's the equivalent of the paved roads built during the roman empire Do we Europeans want to achieve peaceful leadership in the digital era ? Yes, we want, we can, we do !
  10. 10. 9 SalamandreStratégiesforEuropeanCommission-october2010 Peaceful leadership Strategies Oriental point of view (indirect way): Sun Tzu - do not move when the circumstances are not favorable no excuse if you don't move when they are favorable Occidental point of view (direct way) straight batttle. cut the gordian knot with one single, direct, fast and precise hit Salamandre applies both strategies , in a doctrine for new Europe’s peaceful leadership : Pax Digitalia
  11. 11. 10 SalamandreStratégiesforEuropeanCommission-october2010 Pax Digitalis General - Socio economics Problems of the modern capitalism - expansion (problems at the borders ) - ethics - measure - Amortisation (was introduced in the industrial era) Socio-economics of the internet and immaterial goods - too many objects , too much information , going too fast - human body and mind not ready - actual generation first in the history of mankind to live shorter than ancestors - limits of the actual system - implosion of "good“ digital objects ipv4 sacracy , dns war - explosion of "bad" digital objects : spam , malware , viruses - we live with the illusion of stocking everything "at no cost " - war between au authors , distributors , etc - no more gauss curve, but eiffel tower distribution
  12. 12. 11 SalamandreStratégiesforEuropeanCommission-october2010 ISOC Internet of the future scenarios ISOC’s internet of the future survey : http://www.isoc.org/tools/blogs/scenarios Biggest threat as perceived by voters : Increased government control Why ? Because governments can have evil capacities, especially in case of monopoly - Capacity to block domain names extensions. A contrario, il peut aussi empêcher un Etat souverain de définir ses propres restrictions (.corse- libre, etc…) - Captation of value p to p gtld , multicast Science fiction, you think ? No, reality !
  13. 13. 12 SalamandreStratégiesforEuropeanCommission-october2010 Neutrality=Peace First digital wars : - Yugoslavia visa country code erase - Lybia dns erase - Verisign dns errors rerouting Actual Internet governance actors : - ICANN is governance but also a business -dns mapping is just another directory - Isoc approach is different: Consensus management and research, focused on results: IETF, IAB, org registry – projects - ITU no comment Future internet governance actors : Digital Governance is related to directories In the future, other directories will emerge in a m to n matrix - ipv6, objects , intellectual property Neutrality is a sine qua non condition to succeed peacefully - money neutrality , net neutrality , directory neutrality - loosing neutrality implies crisis and wars - “intelligent” money - financial crisis - “intelligent” search engine – information war - “ differentiated internet” – telecom war
