• Today you will be with me in Paradise.
  • Christ is the center of Heaven. To depart and be in Heaven. No, the essence is to be with Christ. All of Heaven’s joys are derivative from Christ and secondary to Christ. They all flow from the depth of his character.
  • I’ve often read at memorial services this depiction of a believer’s death: I’m standing on the seashore. A ship at my side spreads her white sails to the morning breeze and starts for the blue ocean. She’s an object of beauty and strength and I stand and watch her until, at length, she hangs like a speck of white cloud just where the sea and the sky come down to mingle with each other. And then I hear someone at my side saying, “There, she’s gone.” Gone where? Gone from my sight, that is all. She is just as large in mast and hull and spar as she was when she left my side. And just as able to bear her load of living freight to the place of destination. Her diminished size is in me, not in her. And just at the moment when someone at my side says, “There, she’s gone,” there are other eyes watching her coming, and there are other voices ready to take up the glad shout, “Here she comes!” And that is dying.339

  • Nostalgia for Eden Spurgeon sermons
  • Begin with Spurgeon quotes?
  • Note: The eternal Heaven will not involve us going up to Heaven to live with God in his [unearthly] realm. Rather, it will involve God coming down from Heaven to live with us in our realm—the New Earth. We’ve heard it said, “This world is not our home.” We should qualify that to say “This world—as it now is, under the curse—is not our home.” But we should also say, “This world—as it once was, before sin and curse—was our home.” And we should add, “This world—as it will be, delivered from the curse—will be our home.”

  • Hence the need for redemption. The need for a new earth!

    1. 2.

One thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead , I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.

Philippians 3:13-14

    2. 3. Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above , where Christ is seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things above , not on earthly things. Colossians 3:1-2
    3. 4.

In keeping with his promise we are looking forward to a new heaven and a new earth , the home of righteousness. 2 Peter 3:13

    4. 5.

As long as we are at home in the body we are away from the Lord.... We would prefer to be away from the body and at home with the Lord .

2 Corinthians 5:6, 8

    5. 6.

To me, to live is Christ and to die is gain.... I desire to depart and be with Christ , which is better by far .

Philippians 1:21, 23

    6. 7.

Truly I say to you, today you will be with me in Paradise .

Luke 23:43

    7. 8.

When I was a boy, the thought of Heaven used to frighten me more than the thought of Hell. I pictured Heaven as a place where time would be perpetual Sundays, with perpetual services from which there would be no escape.

David Lloyd George

    8. 9.

“ I’ve been a Christian since I was five. I’m married to a youth pastor. When I was seven, a teacher at my Christian school told me that when I got to Heaven, I wouldn’t know anyone or anything from earth. I was terrified of dying. I was never told any different by anyone. . . . It’s been really hard for me to advance in my Christian walk because of this fear of Heaven and eternal life.”

    9. 10. "Whenever I think about heaven, it makes me depressed. I'd rather cease to exist when I die. I can't stand the thought of endless boring tedium. Heaven doesn't sound much better than hell. I'd rather be annihilated than spend eternity like that."
    10. 11.

… the time has come for my departure . I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day .

2 Timothy 4:6-8

    11. 12.

“ the time has come for my departure ” ( analousis , to loosen)

1. Loosening ox from yoke or cart.

2. Pulling up tent stakes for travel.

3. Untying ship from dock, to let sail.

4. Unchaining a prisoner.

5. Solving a problem.

    12. 13.

If any righteous man among the Christians passes from this world, they rejoice and offer thanks to God , and they escort his body with songs and thanksgiving as if he were setting out from one place to another nearby .

Aristides, AD 125

    13. 14.

Since the children have flesh and blood, Christ too shared in their humanity so that by his death he might destroy him who holds the power of death —that is, the devil—and free those who all their lives were held in slavery by their fear of death.

Hebrews 2:14-15

    14. 15.

God will destroy the shroud that enfolds all peoples, the sheet that covers all nations; he will swallow up death forever . The Sovereign Lord will wipe away the tears from all faces ; he will remove the disgrace of his people from all the earth.

Isaiah 25:7-8

    15. 16.

The trumpet will sound, the dead will be raised imperishable…then the saying that is written will come true: “ Death has been swallowed up in victory . Where, O death, is your victory? Where, O death, is your sting?”

1 Corinthians 15:55

    16. 17.

Let us greet the day which assigns each of us to his own home, which snatches us from this place and sets us free from the snares of the world, and restores us to Paradise and the kingdom. Anyone who has been in foreign lands longs to return to his own native land.... We regard Paradise as our native land.

Cyprian , AD 250

    17. 18.

Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth… God will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away…. No longer will there be any curse .

Revelation 21:1,4; 22:3

    18. 19.

Then I saw…a new earth… I saw the Holy City, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God. . . . And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Now the dwelling of God is with men , and he will live with them . They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God.”

Revelation 21:1-3

    19. 20.

Immanuel: God with us

    20. 21.

Note: The eternal Heaven will not involve us going up to Heaven to live with God in his [unearthly] realm. Rather, it will involve God coming down from Heaven to live with us in our realm—the New Earth.

    21. 22.

    22. 23.

It becomes us to spend this life only as a journey toward heaven . . . to which we should subordinate all other concerns of life. Why should we labor for or set our hearts on anything else , but that which is our proper end and true happiness?

Jonathan Edwards

    23. 24.

Be afraid of the One who can destroy both soul and body in hell.

Matthew 10:28

    24. 25.

In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth .

Genesis 1:1

Behold, I will create new heavens and a new earth . Isaiah 65:17

    25. 26.

“As the new heavens and the new earth that I make will endure before me," declares the Lord, "so will your name and descendants endure."

Isaiah 66:22

    26. 27.

In keeping with his promise we are looking forward to a new heaven and a new earth , the home of righteousness.

2 Peter 3:13

Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth , for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away. Revelation 21:1

They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God.”

Revelation 21:1-3

    28. 29.

I know that my Redeemer lives, and that in the end he will stand upon the earth . And after my skin has been destroyed, yet in my flesh I will see God ; I myself will see him with my own eyes —I, and not another. How my heart yearns within me!

Job 19:25-27

    29. 30.

Then he will say, “Depart from me, you [people] who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels .”

Jesus, Matthew 25:41

    30. 31.

The Son of Man will send out his angels, and they will weed out of his kingdom everything that causes sin and all who do evil. They will throw them into the fiery furnace , where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

Jesus, Matthew 13:40-42

    31. 32.

For the perishable must clothe itself with the imperishable, and the mortal with immortality. 1 Cor. 15:55

It is this (the perishable and mortal) which puts on that (the imperishable and immortal).

And so we will be with the Lord forever. 1 Thess. 4:17

It is we, the very same people who walk this earth, who will walk the New Earth.

    32. 33.

All the dead shall be raised up, with the self-same bodies , and none other.

The Westminster Confession

of Faith, 1646

    33. 34.

The Lord Jesus Christ ... will transform our lowly bodies so that they will be like his glorious body .

Philippians 3:20-21

    34. 35.

[The apostles] were startled and frightened, thinking they saw a ghost. [Jesus] said to them, “Look at my hands and my feet. It is I myself! Touch me and see; a ghost does not have flesh and bones , as you see I have.” …He asked them, “Do you have anything here to eat?” They gave him a piece of broiled fish, and he took it and ate it in their presence . Luke 24:37-43

    35. 36.

Forever dispel the myth of a nonphysical resurrection. A spiritual resurrection is like whitewashing a wall with red paint.
