Slide 1: 2007 Horizon Report Uses and Applications

Slide 2: 2007 Horizon Report Summary • The Horizon Report details up and coming technologies • The report showcases applications of these technologies • The report also gives a time frame in which these technologies will likely be implemented widely

Slide 3: Technologies To Watch • One year or less – User Created Content – Social Networking • Two to three years – Mobile Phones – Virtual Worlds • Four to five years – New Scholarship and Emerging Forms of Publication – Massively Multiplayer Educational Gaming

Slide 4: Using the Horizon Report Remarkably little data was found on using the Horizon Report. Several references to the report itself were found using simple internet searches, but actual data on how it was used was impossible to find. According to the research readily available, universities used it, and those universities that did were mostly associated with the university publishing the report. This suggests that educators were largely unaware of the reports existence.

Slide 5: Recommendations It is recommended that the publishers of the Horizon Report use advertising to make more educators aware of this extremely useful tool.

Slide 6: Advertising • Targeted Mailers – Send mailers to universities to make them aware of the report, possibly including the report itself. If not, a simple and direct URL to the report. – Allow those who view the report to give feedback via a user satisfaction survey – Track downloads by IP address

Slide 7: Benefits of Data Collection • By utilizing a user satisfaction survey, the NMC can see how their report is being used and find ways to improve upon the report • The NMC can then rely on active, rather than passive data collection. Because they are actively seeking user data, they will become more aware of potential uses and problems with the report, and also it is more likely that those who do receive the report will recommend it to others as they see their comments and suggestions used by the NMC
