    7. Did you know……
      • Support for resources projects
        • Proposals for resources projects are welcome in responsive mode
      • Support for project students
        • Projects must out-last the duration of the studentship (3 years minimum)
        • The Principal Investigator must come from a recognised outlet
        • A separate programme of work for the student must be specified; project students are not just a cheap substitute for a research assistant!
      • Support for international Co-Investigators
        • Proposals may now include co-investigators from anywhere in the world
        • Some direct costs may be associated, if specifically justified and not exceeding 30% of the total value of the grant
        • ESRC is piloting on behalf of all Research Councils
    8. Mid-Career Development Fellowships
      • Will be launched in August 2008
      • Replaces ESRC Research Fellowship scheme
      • Support for two pathways:
        • Career development to enable work at the interface with another discipline
        • Conversion route into academic research from allied fields of professional practice
      • Proposals for purely theoretical research (which may previously have been submitted to the Research Fellowship schemes) are best submitted through the small and standard grants route: Principal Investigators can apply for 100% of their time under these schemes
    9. International Research Funding Opportunities
      • Bilateral Agreements
      • Enable projects to be jointly funded by the ESRC and research funding agencies in other countries
      • Each national agency funds the research carried out by its national researchers, according to its normal rules
      • Not a separate stream of funding: enable international collaborations to be submitted to the open standard and small grants competition
      • Both research funding agencies must agree to support a proposal for it to be funded.
      • Functional agreements with 10 agencies, allowing joint submissions to both
    10. Bilateral Agreements
      • Bilateral funding agreements:
      • AUSTRALIA: The Australian Research Council (ARC)
      • AUSTRIA:  Fonds zur Forderung der wissenschaftlichen Forschung (FWF)

      • SOUTH AFRICA: National Research Foundation (NRF)
      • SWEDEN: Vetenskapsrådet (VR) - the Swedish Research Council
    11. International Research Funding Opportunities: Europe

      • ECRP - Responsive mode scheme to allow joint proposals among researchers in 19 different countries. Common peer review and (beginning in 2008) common decision making.

      • either for co-ordinators of projects within the Social Sciences and Humanities programme
      • or for participants in multi-disciplinary projects within other programmes
