  • 1. EMS ZOMBIE SURVIVAL GUIDE CIVIL DEFENSE BRIEFING An alien pathogen unleashed in a remote location of the country has awakened a crowd of flesh-eating zombies that are trying to end the world as we know it – one victim at a time. The president has declared a state of emergency and urged all citizens to take refuge from the “walkers” lurking outside. The National Guard and the extended military forces are working around the clock to contain the masses of undead humans from entering the cities – but wounded survivors outside the safe zones are in desperate need of medical assistance. ALL EMS AGENCIES HAVE BEEN ASKED TO AID THE WOUNDED SURVIVORS The federal government has issued an Emergency Zombie Protocol to maximize the efficiency of all field operations while preserving the security of the safe areas.
  • 2. EMS ZOMBIE SURVIVAL GUIDE ARE YOU READY? Do your medics have the proper equipment to distinguish a normal human from one experiencing zombie symptoms? How fast can they check a patient in to the hospital? Can your agency easily feed and retrieve data to and from hospitals and the CDC headquarters? This guidebook will help you evaluate your agency’s emergency preparedness level in the event of a zombie invasion; the future of humanity depends on it.
  • 3. EMS ZOMBIE SURVIVAL GUIDE EMS ZOMBIE PROTOCOL 1 CONTAIN THE VIRUS Your efforts against these gory flesh-eating creatures will go in vain without a plan to contain the virus. Before your medics can begin to assist the screaming crowds of survivors, you must have the right operational backbone in place to support the eradication efforts. 2 PRESERVE HUMAN LIFE Your medics will need all the help they can get to maintain order and protect others from the walking dead. With the right tools and support, your medics can minimize the amount of administrative work so they can go back to the business of saving lives. 3 SECURE THE COMMUNITY There’s no clinical science behind the long-term effects of zombie wounds on living humans. Understanding the evolution of your patients is critical to improve the performance of your rescue efforts and prevent a second wave of carnage and terror on earth.
  • 4. EMS ZOMBIE SURVIVAL GUIDE CONTAIN THE VIRUS SECURE ALL DATA Storing data locally requires expensive IT maintenance as well as budget resources in reserve to deal with unexpected situations – like the undead taking over our world. These zombies are smart and want access to your data. You can prevent this by choosing a service that automatically scales to meet the demands of your agency while encrypting and storing all of your HIPAA-sensitive data in highly secured, zombie-proof hosting facilities (like SAS 70, Type II, PCI compliant). SIMPLIFY DATA COLLECTION In the event of a zombie outbreak, your medics won’t have any time to waste when reporting, yet the government needs data from you in nearly real-time. Solve this quandary by equipping your medics with an EPCR that is never more than two clicks away from the information needed to complete a patient care record. With the right system, you can streamline and automate reporting so medics focus on saving lives – not filing paperwork. TRACK YOUR MEDICS You know your team is ready to handle the most overwhelming crises – but are they current on the latest zombie training courses? It’s critical your technology partner provides an integrated dashboard allowing you to easily manage medics’ personnel files, training courses and education history. That way, when the undead appear, you’ll know that your team is ready to deal with these blood-thirsty creatures.
  • 5. EMS ZOMBIE SURVIVAL GUIDE PRESERVE HUMAN LIFE ASSESS THE SITUATION The reactions to a zombie bite or scratch will vary from patient to patient. Provide your medics with a robust EPCR system that is simple and friendly to manage so they can use it as a reference tool to treat patients faster while checking their records to see if they’ve been struck by a zombie before. Plus, by doing so they’ll be completing the patient care report on scene rather than doing it later at the hospital or the station. TRANSLATE ZOMBIE SPEAK These drooling beasts might be silent – but even the tiniest scratch can seize part of the human brain and make “the living” speak another language. By taking the right EPCR system with them, your medics can break through the language barrier to determine a patient’s problem and explain treatments regardless of what language they speak. PRE-REGISTER YOUR PATIENTS Medics can’t lose time registering patients at the hospital –they must be able to drop survivors and head back immediately to rescue others. Calling or faxing are outdated and, besides, the military requires preregistration of patients prior to arrival. With the right system, medics can stay ahead of the hungry undead by alerting the hospital and pre-registering the patient before leaving the scene of the incident.
  • 6. EMS ZOMBIE SURVIVAL GUIDE SECURE THE COMMUNITY AID POST-APOCALYPTIC SURVIVORS The post-zombie trauma caused on survivors could trigger a record number of 911 calls that could collapse the emergency system. By transitioning to a mobile healthcare delivery model, your medics will be able to determine on scene whether a patient needs to be hospitalized – or if it’s just another case of blood-spattering nightmares. RETRIEVE HOSPITAL INFORMATION The best way to prepare your team for another potential zombie war is by understanding what went right and wrong during the first one. It’s essential that you have a system to easily track a patient’s progress during and after being released from the hospital. Ask your technology partner if they provide a service that communicates and exchanges data with hospitals everywhere.
  • 7. ESO EPCR PARTNER WITH A ZOMBIE EXPERT You can’t wait to find a lamebrain at your station to address this crisis. It’s critical that you plan ahead and partner with an organization that has the experience and technology needed to address this –or any other– challenge. A good starting point? Get in touch with the folks at ESO. Not only do they deliver zombie-proof technology; they also have the expertise you need to take your agency to new levels of efficiency while keeping things within zombie-budget.
