Macedonian Academic and Research GRID Initiative – MARGI - Presentation Transcript

    1. Macedonian Academic and Research GRID Initiative – MARGI Prof. d-r Aneta Buckovska, Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Information Technologies Ss Cyril and Methodius University [email_address]
    2. Scientific Research and the Grid
      • Scientific research is the foundation of quantitative knowledge and understanding of our surroundings
      • This understanding enables technologies that simplify and improve our daily lives
      • Scientific research is increasingly a team sport requiring that distributed virtual communities collaborate using shared tools and resources
      • The Grid was invented to make such sharing and collaboration possible using information technology
    3. CERN LHC Computing Grid (LCG)‏
      • Large Hadron Collider (LHC) will be world’s largest scientific instrument when operational in 2007 (EXPECTED)
        • Started 8.9.2008 at 10:00 o’clock
      • Will generate 12-14 PetaBytes of data per year
      • Requires world-wide grid for data analysis
    4. Size of EGEE infrastructure today: • ~200 sites in 40 countries • ~25 000 CPU Size of SEEGRID infrastructure today: • ~30 sites in 11 countries • ~700 CPUs EUROPEAN GRID INFRASTRUSTURE
    5. National GRID Initiatives
      • National Grid Initiatives (NGIs) can be defined as concentrated efforts taken at National level in order to deploy, operate, and expand grid infrastructures in a coherent and coordinated way
        • 1.a.2. Macedonian Academic Research Grid Initiative - MARGI established
          • Official date of start: April 15th 2005
          • Established under SEE-GRID project and UNESCO HP Project
        • 1.a.3. NGI initiating body
          • Initiated by SS Cyril and Methodius University (UKIM), Skopje
    6. National GRID Initiatives (2)
      • 1.c. Membership :

            • Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Information Technologies
            • Faculty of Natural Sciences and Mathematics
          • Each member has one voting right.
        • 1.c.3 Collaboration with NREN MARNet was initiating body for MARGI set-up
          • 2 MARGI members are members of MARNet management Board
          • Joint decision making
