Scientific Research and the Grid <ul><li>Scientific research is the foundation of quantitative knowledge and understanding of our surroundings </li></ul><ul><li>This understanding enables technologies that simplify and improve our daily lives </li></ul><ul><li>Scientific research is increasingly a team sport requiring that distributed virtual communities collaborate using shared tools and resources </li></ul><ul><li>The Grid was invented to make such sharing and collaboration possible using information technology </li></ul>

CERN LHC Computing Grid (LCG)‏ <ul><li>Large Hadron Collider (LHC) will be world’s largest scientific instrument when operational in 2007 (EXPECTED) </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Started 8.9.2008 at 10:00 o’clock </li></ul></ul><ul><li>Will generate 12-14 PetaBytes of data per year </li></ul><ul><li>Requires world-wide grid for data analysis </li></ul>
