Ruth's (u)OWBC, Chapter 18: Strange Adventure!

 1. 1.

Howdy hi, and welcome back to Ruth’s (un)Officially Wacky Boolprop Challenge ! Last time my Sims mostly refused to listen to me, and Myrna saved the day a couple times.

I am still accepting applications for recap writers, by the way…

This chapter contains no bad words and no imagery that you haven’t seen before. However, it does contain allusions to grown-up stuff that is not usual for Ruth’s ; these allusions grew out of the way I thought the characters would behave. If you read this to children, some of them might have awkward questions. I foresee this as being the most grown-up chapter in the whole story. I hope it does not offend, since that was not my intention.

 2. 2.

When I opened the lot, Lisa was in aspiration failure. As far as I can tell, it was because her grandmother died on the previous rotation.*

LISA: I can’t believe it! How can she be gone? Why did she have to leave?

( Leila and Phobe exchange glances )

PHOEBE: Death is but a part of life. Thou must not let it disconcert thee so.

LEILA ( gently ): Sometimes people die, Lisa.

PHOEBE: Nay, Leila, the loss of one so dear should not happen!

*For those of you who read Already in Progress , Lisa’s grandmother was Eileen (Tang) Sanders.

 3. 3.

Lisa’s aspiration failure proved difficult to shake. Her Want panel involved First Kisses, Going Steady, and Going To College.

Playing pool just didn’t cut it.

 4. 4.

In fact, things got very bad.

 5. 5.

Lisa is closer to Leila than to anyone, and she is the only one who takes Leila seriously. This was a huge surprise to me. I mean, neither girl has any Nice points worth mentioning, but I didn’t expect Lisa to attack her twin!

I think I would have preferred a visit from the Shrink, honestly.

 6. 6.

I don’t think I was the only one, either.

MYRNA: Lisa, honey, are you okay?

LISA: Oh, Momma! I am just so unhappy all the time now. What’s the point of living if you’re just going to die? If your whole family is going to die?

MYRNA: Well, I suppose that’s part of why we have children and grandchildren. As long as you and your sisters are alive and happy, in some way, your grandmother is too.

LISA: …Can I have a baby, then?

MYRNA: You have a baby before you graduate college and I will kill you myself.

 7. 7.

Babies can be quite healing, though, and when Aunt Buttercup gave birth to Skye, Lisa’s aspiration meter took quite the jump.

… Or maybe it was the lunch meat sandwich followed by the call for scholarships that was responsible for the jump. I may be taking a little artistic license here. You have to admit, though, this is both more interesting and more logical for a Family Sim.

Incidentally, Skye is proof positive that my method of restoring recessive genetics worked: both Buttercup and Albert have black hair. Unfortunately, since Albert’s mother was blonde, I still do not know if Buttercup was carrying a blonde gene or a red one.

 8. 8.

The effects were immediate. Not only did Lisa perk up, but she managed the xylophone trick!

She managed it several times in a row, actually, but apparently Sims are programmed to make ridiculous faces when they get it, and this was the best shot I had.

 9. 9.

And does that look like a Bronze Robotics Badge to anyone else? Not too shabby!

 10. 10.

Leila is doing quite well, at least as long as you ignore her being attacked by her sister for no reason at all, and the fact that virtually nobody in her family takes her seriously.

She won the Twinkletoes Award scholarship for college. I believe you need eight skill points in dancing to get that, but I can’t be sure. It is a hidden skill, after all.

 11. 11.

ROSE: Leila, will I ever be as good a dancer as you?

LEILA: I’m sure you will, Rose! You’re very light on your feet; all you need is practice.

ROSE: ( sigh ) Yeah, you’re right. I’ll never be any good.

 12. 12.

Since dancers need to be quite fit -- most people don’t realize just how athletic dancing is -- Leila took to spending time on the dance sphere.

 13. 13.

Admittedly, that was a development I probably should have thought about for a little bit longer.

 14. 14.

But Adam makes it look so easy!

Unfortunately, all Adam is getting out of the dance sphere is Body points. Since time is marching on, Adam consulted with a dear friend and fellow Knowledge Sim who just happens to be married to a woman with green skin and big black eyes…

 15. 15.

OLD ADAM: I simply do not understand it! I have filled out the warranty card -- I have filled out both warranty cards! I spend every free moment on one or the other of the two devices! Indeed, my relationship with my own dear wife is in jeopardy! And yet I can neither meet aliens again nor stop my own continual fascination with them! I was hoping that, perhaps, since your own wife is, ah…

LEONID SANDERS: Trixie is looking like alien, but is as human as you or me. ( whispers ) She does not even speak Alien very well. ( in a normal tone ) But her father is wearing special outfit when he is getting her. I think is in attic somewhere.

 16. 16.

LEONID: Da, just as I am thinking. Outfit is in attic. Please, take for luck.

OLD ADAM: Truly? You would truly give me such a valuable heirloom? O no, I could not take advantage of you so!

LEONID: Take, please! In this house, only Elders and Children. Is better that outfit goes to someone who will use properly.

OLD ADAM: O, Leonid! Truly, you are the best of friends!

 17. 17.

OLD ADAM: O, Leonid! I think you cannot have looked in the box, or you would never have suggested such a thing!

MYRNA ( eagerly ): Can I see now?

OLD ADAM: No! Do not come in! This is not for ladies!

MYRNA: Oooooh, now I really want to see!

OLD ADAM: Stay away! ( in an undertone ) Still, if this is what it will take for the aliens to look upon me with favor… ( steeling himself ) Where is my razor?

 18. 18.

OLD ADAM: Myrna, I am humiliated enough without your laughter. Please stop! ( as fresh gales emanate from the kitchen ) Stop, I say! And keep the girls away from the windows. I wish to preserve their delicate sensibilities.

 19. 19.

OLD ADAM: Myrna, do nnnnnoooooot waiiiiiiit uuuuuup forrrrrrr meeeeee….!

 20. 20.

MYRNA: How did it go?

OLD ADAM: I do not wish to talk about it.

MYRNA: Did you get what you wanted?

OLD ADAM ( crossly ): I said, “I do not wish to talk about it.”

MYRNA: Adam? Tell me what’s wrong.

 21. 21.

OLD ADAM: I have done everything they demanded! I have made new purchases and filled out the warranty cards and kept myself in trim! I have submitted to examinations , Myrna, very personal examinations! And now they tell me that my androgens are too low! ( sniffles ) My sister -- who is older than I! -- has no trouble. I daresay they would not take issue with her androgen levels.

MYRNA: But aren’t hers supposed to be low?

OLD ADAM: My point precisely! I am not enough of a man for them! If my own experience is to be believed, then they will take any kind of a man at all! How wretched am I, how pitiable to not even be as much of a man as a --

MYRNA: Shhhh.

 22. 22.

MYRNA: I know how to make you feel better.

 23. 23.

Eventually, people get over disappointments and facial hair grows back. One’s children can be a great help when it comes to the recovery process.

 24. 24.

(For those of you who may have noticed that Old Adam was dressed in an Athletic uniform, well spotted! He managed to snag the career reward and is now free to pursue his LTW of Becoming Education Minister.)

 25. 25.

Lest you think I’ve been neglecting the Tacky Flamingo, let me reassure you: it is doing just fine and is roughly five stars away from Level Nine. Considering that I only expected Adam to get it to Level Six before handing over the reins, it’s doing very well indeed!

 26. 26.

In fact, Lisa has even starting tagging along with her father. Her Sales skills aren’t all that great yet, but she’s trying.

LISA: You should really come in! We can offer you bowling, and hot tubs, and espresso, and free snacks, and we even have toilets !

ANASTASIA TSVIRKUNOV: Hmmm. Are they nice toilets?

LISA: Oh yes! If there was a “Toilet of the Year” award, they’d win it!

 27. 27.

Passing Along those business perks is going quite well, though. The start-and-stop technique is a huge help here. However, since the business is at such a high level, even staying at the TackyFlamingo until well after dark didn’t get Lisa up to speed.

Fortunately, we have plenty of time yet.

 28. 28.

The girls got a snow day partway through the rotation, and I naturally took advantage of it to build up friendly relationships all around. ( happily ) I love snowball fights and water balloon fights for that. No person-person minus signs, ever!

 29. 29.

Rose and Lisa even got in a little extra bonding time, since they were shockingly not-close.

This seems to be a recurring theme in my game, actually: the eldest and the youngest not being particularly close…

 30. 30.

However, with Adam’s inherent focus on education, a snow day doesn’t mean a day off. It just means plenty of quality time with the magic bookshelf.

No, Adam didn’t earn it that quickly. Ryan earned it last generation with one day in the Education career -- and no promotion.

And speaking of earning things, most of the girls have maxed out at least one skill at this point. Lisa has maxed out at least two. I have strategies for who studies what, to make nabbing career rewards that much easier.

 31. 31.

Myrna put her baking skills to good use by making a birthday cake.

Okay, it’s not the O fficial Eaxis birthday cake, but it’s a cake that will be eaten following a birthday. That counts.

“ But whose birthday is it?” I hear you cry.

 32. 32.

Why, it’s Rose’s, of course!

And while it is a little Wacky to wear your school uniform at eight o’clock at night on a Saturday, it’s not Wacky enough for Ruth’s .

 33. 33.

I did give Rose a complete makeover, heavy on the pink and the flowers. Alas, this is the only picture I remembered to take.

Rose actually prefers blue or white to pink, but girls are supposed to like pink, so that’s what she wears. Girls are also supposed to have long hair and wear makeup, which she does.

( sigh ) Poor Rose. I remember when I tried so hard to do what I was supposed to instead of what I wanted. It’s not a lot of fun.

 34. 34.

Now, I told you about Skye, the new baby in the Buttercup and Albert Shankel household. What I didn’t mention was that Skye’s older sister and brother are now college students! They did get one day with their little sister, which they mostly spent fighting over who got to hold her.

We will see Jo and Cecil again, never fear.

And when we do, they will be in much better clothing. ( mutters ) Now why can’t I get this kind of Wacky in the main house?

 35. 35.

Oakapple’s little family is doing quite well too. They are currently in the midst of stocking up the farm stand, which is rapidly gaining satisfied customers.

Oddly enough, many of those satisfied customers are Sims who have several Gardening badges themselves and who could readily grow their own.

Which brings us to the end of my prepared remarks. Please join me next time for the last chapter before the Plot kicks in!

 36. 36.

Notes, disclaimers, and other trivia

The title of this chapter is a song from The Yeomen of the Guard . I liked the first line for this chapter, and think it fits, but if you came here from Live Journal, you may have noticed that the following line has no relevance to this chapter. For that, I apologize.

 37. 37.

Those of you who read Already in Progress may remember Robi’s very special stargazing outfit, which Leonid gave Adam. The back of the shirt says “Hiya spaceman! New in town?” Adam’s stargazing outfit is a reasonable facsimile of the early 20th century version: the men in that line of work were either fashionably dressed, clean-shaven, and tastefully made-up or they wore dresses.* And I just couldn’t put Adam in a dress.

To be clear, Adam’s distress and questioning of his masculinity has to do with the occupation , not the targeted clientele. This has to do with the prevalent fashions described above.

*Citation available upon request.

 38. 38.

Those of you who have been following my threads on Boolprop may remember that I was asking about a dance sphere abduction. That is because Old Adam was actually abducted from the dance sphere. Since I could not use the real abduction in the story, I boolpropped an abduction for the picture and quit without saving. Because it never really happened as far as the game is concerned, I don’t consider it cheating.

 39. 39.

fuzzy spork conducted multiple experiments to answer my questions, and determined that, although the dance sphere results in a 100% pregnancy rate, Old Adam was too old to be fertile. It was a lot of work for something that didn’t affect her at all, and I am very very grateful. Three cheers for Fuzzy!

Hip hip hooray!

Hip hip hooray!

Hip hip hooray!

Until next time, Happy Simming!
