  • maximise Maximise ICT Ltd at Maximise ICT Ltd In response to 'What a load of Rubbish' I must disagree - you obviously haven't been there. I can give you several examples, but one must suffice: The school is nearing completion of a PFI project. Half the new building is occupied whilst some classes are still held in the old building. - It is astounding to see the change in attitude of some of our most difficult children as they switch back and forth between the two buildings. In the old building, when they attend, they are lively to say the least and make very little progress with their work, break times and behaviour on the corridors is near to chaotic.

However, when these same students are timetabled for lessons in the New Block their behavious changes. They walk on the correct side of the corridor, they arrive to lessons on time, behave much better in class and get through a lot more work. Somehow the calming effect of the new quality environment has its impact on the students. And not only them, the staff feel more organised and enjoy their working environment too. For all, therefore, the New Build is a place that people want to be in, work becomes enjoyable and more productive and the 'Kids' DO come into school!

  • wasto wasto Whilst i agree that these buildings are fantastic, the architecture and design do not make the education. Unless the workforce within these new buildings is also of the new generation of educational thinking little will happen. Similarly place a group of creative and forward thinkg educators in an old victorian building with a few contemporary resources and they can transform learning within hours.

My concern is that billions can be spent on buildings but unless there is appropriate funding to support for the Rip van Wrinklies in teaching it will be in vain. I daily work with teachers from the brilliant to the opposite end of the spectrum and everywhere in between. Sadly I see too few who are ready to embrace the challenge that we are exhorting. Even in many of the BSF schools in UK the futurustic shell houses the same old pedagogy. Sadly Rip would see an awful lot of teachers standing clicking on the Interactive whiteboards dominating the learning space with teacher directed activities.

Slow down thebuilding programme and insist that new schools will only be built when the teachers who will work there are appropriately skilled, of the right mind set to embrace change and have leadership within that can inspire and motivate teachers and learners like to face this brave new world. RIP

  • maximise Maximise ICT Ltd at Maximise ICT Ltd Yes, great, we are just getting round to doing some of these things in the UK supported by a lot of BSF (Building Schools for the Future) funding. BUT are these changes in response to architects' dreams or are they based on the reality of teaching and learning, all-age schools and the challenges of economic and environmental considerations. 3 years ago Reply
