    1. Sexuality in the Academic Curricula in Universities in Asia, Africa and Latin America
    2. Sexuality in the Academic Curricula in Universities in Asia, Africa and Latin America PROJECT PRESENTATION
    3. Why
      • There is a lack of education of gender and sexualities in countries of the South and this project aims to rebuild this field through new generations of scholars and teachers.
      • This initiative builds upon previous research
        • Ford Foundation 2004-2005
        • Researchers from universities in Asia, Africa, and Latin America assessed institutional capacity for teaching and knowledge production in the field of sexualities in its interaction with gender in Southern contexts.

    11. General Objectives
      • International Component
        • Collaboration between scholars and public intellectuals from the South.
        • Construct cross-cultural and cross-discipline methodologies for teaching that will be applied in local contexts.
        • Explore possible interdisciplinary links between academia, political, and activist arenas in order to promote ground-breaking theoretical work, materials, and research frameworks in the fields of sexuality and gender.
      • Institutional Component
        • To assess capacity of public and private universities located in each country for the formal inclusion of these topics.
        • Reshape current debates regarding gender and sexualities by distributing our results, debates, and materials in an international meeting, as well through group participation in international academic conferences.

    12. Methodology
      • Research and Action
        • During eighteen months we will conduct our research through forums and critical analysis of scholarly journals that include studies on sexuality issues.
        • Teams will use research results to engage in curricula development in public or private universities that already have sexuality courses.
        • During this last phase we will conduct periodic evaluations in each country, sub-regional and international meetings, and continually seek forms of distributing our findings.

    13. Research Questions
      • What schools of thought and references are used in each country that influence the teaching of sexuality and gender?
      • Does the teaching of gender consider socio-economic factors, sexual citizenship, and sexual diversity?
      • What are the most effective methodologies, theories, and practices what can overcome existing limitations to the integration of sexualities in academic curricula?
      • How can we build informed academic constituencies in the humanities, social sciences, medicine, and law so that curricula can translate into political transformation?
Sexuality in the Academic Curricula in Universities in Asia, Africa and Latin America
    14. Project Results
      • Researchers and local teams will participate in technical committees and engage in the direct incorporation of sexuality and gender content in academic curricula.
      • Research results that will serve to establish cross-cultural comparisons which will be presented as chapters of a book, working papers, collective publications, etc.
      • Exchange of skills, results, and policy impact among scholars, advocates, policy makers, and activists that will translate into programmatic action in the medium term.
