Whether it's Latin Fiesta, a soaring choir; writing or performing music for theatre and the live music scene; accompanying the finest of Brisbane’s vocal luminaries; performing at Woodford festival, Brisbane’s fringe festival; sharing a support for Tiny Tim, a stage with Ernie Dingo or presenting a music workshop: The song is the centre of it all. I sang in a couple of 500 piece choirs in the 'big room' at the Brisbane City Hall before I reached high school. By 15 I had swapped a Creedence record plus eleven dollars for my first guitar that was better suited to pedal steel and was subsequently consumed by a significant but not catastrophic bedroom fire. Since then I’ve worked with the jazz vocalists; Yani, Pearl Black, Leah Cotterell, Andrew Ferret, Chris Maver and Lara-Jane Thompson. I've enjoyed the privilege of sharing the stage with Russell Bayne as well as working on various projects with the jazz and orchestral bassist David Sandercoe. My technical approach to music is influenced by the great jazz guitar playing of Barry Moreton, Joe Diorio, Joe Pass, the late great Emily Remler as well as the musical sensibilities and rhythmic genius of Sheila Escovedo, Bernardo Alvarez and Nicolò Paganini. I’ve fronted and performed in my own and other band line ups, Land Sharks, Monizow and Catfish, helped to create and performed with smaller outfits, Black Crow Blues, Crazy Moon and The Dirt Floor Music Company. I’ve learnt the finer points of the Afro-Latin and South Indian musical sensibilities in Fiesta Tropical and Mambo Sopote. I was even apprenticed to a Steel Drum maker - the inimitable Mr. Michael Green who also made the finest sweet pumpkin chili sauce east of Oropouche. But my love of the interplay of rich harmony, melody and sophisticated rhythm, born out of those early years in choir (and maybe the influence of early Carmen Miranda movies) has pulled me inexorably to the rich library of song from the Americas - north and south. Thus my love affair with jazz, bossa, samba and samba baion.
