Intelligent RFID-technology solution to the Green Sector in Europe

  1. 1. Intelligent RFID-technology solution to the Green Sector in Europe Kim Escherich - Executive IT Architect, IBM 29 Sep 2009
  2. 2. Contents <ul><li>Background </li></ul><ul><li>Business problem </li></ul><ul><li>Solution </li></ul><ul><li>Long term vision </li></ul>
  3. 3. The Green Sector is a very large, complex and highly integrated industry
  4. 4. Container Centralen is a small company with a significant impact on the Green Sector and wirespread operations Started in 1976, the CC system was created due to demand for a solution to transport flowers and plants 80.000 users across 22 countries in Europe, e.g. growers, auctions, transporters, exporters, retailers Based on an exchange system, leading to increased efficiency and lower number of containers needed. 3,5 million containers in use, 22 million shelves
  5. 5. The problem: Containers are being counterfeited leading to several problems across the Green Sector <ul><li>Approx 10% of pool is assumed to be counterfeits today </li></ul><ul><li>Lower quality causes problems in supply chain </li></ul><ul><li>Significant repair & maintenance costs </li></ul><ul><li>Owner gets maintenance burden but no corresponding income </li></ul>
  6. 6. THE CHALLENGE: Make impossible to clone, copy, break and use as widespread logistics solution at the same time. Also support use in very demanding industrial heavy metal extreeme environment. <ul><li>THE SOLUTION: </li></ul><ul><li>Tag all containers with secure tag to count and authenticate </li></ul><ul><li>Implement CC RFID inhouse solution </li></ul><ul><li>Extend to supply chain partners, e.g. Growers, auction houses, transporters, exporters, retail </li></ul><ul><li>Prepare for future track & trace solution across the Green Sector </li></ul>
  7. 7. The project have solved a number of very hard technical challenges <ul><li>Create stable RFID-solution that works in all-metal-environment </li></ul><ul><li>Build un-cloneable tag </li></ul><ul><li>Establish security solution that is very hard to break </li></ul><ul><li>Distribute solution to thousands of users </li></ul><ul><li>Create extreemely decentralised/autonomous setup </li></ul><ul><li>Tag 3,5 million units located somewhere in 22 countries - very fast </li></ul><ul><li>Solve technical issues, but don’t forget the business benefits </li></ul>
  8. 8. The solution will streamline and control processes around handling containers – here an example of how to receive containers Notification Type: Inbound Customer: Kahlenberg Count: 20 Confirmation Type: Inbound Customer: Kahlenberg Count: 20 If containers cannot be read, are identified as counterfeits or other unusual situation Inbound Exception Process is initiated 1. Customer Kahlenberg informs CC about delivery of empty containers 2. Sales Rep completes booking in Loglink 4. Benny Grower arrives at Depot and hands in containers 6. Outbound Confirmation created in PDA and sync ’ d with Loglink 3. Inbound Notification created in Loglink and sync ’ d with PDA in Depot 5. Depot Worker select inbound delivery notification for Benny Grower, scans and accept containers. Loglink
  9. 9. Success of the solution is highly dependent on the support and participation of all stakeholders in the Green Sector Cross docking Growers Retail/DC Auctions Whole-salers Depot/Wash Transport Transport Transport Checkpoint Checkpoint Checkpoint Checkpoint Checkpoint Checkpoint Checkpoint <ul><li>Build trust and ensure genuine equipment in all handover-situations in the supply chain </li></ul><ul><li>Challenge: Spread solution to all relevant stakeholders (10.000+) </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Find devices to implement at reasonable cost </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Support ability to work mobile and disconnected </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Build flexibility to support advanced requirements from auction houses and simple requirements from growers at the same time </li></ul></ul>
  10. 10. The solution is built on a number of components Partner Domain CC Domain <ul><li>TAGGED OBJECTS </li></ul><ul><li>On-metal tag solution (Confidex) </li></ul><ul><li>Use of several security mechanisms to ensure authentication </li></ul><ul><li>CENTRAL CC SOLUTION </li></ul><ul><li>Integration to logistics system </li></ul><ul><li>Security solution </li></ul><ul><li>Fraud detection </li></ul><ul><li>DEPOT SOLUTION </li></ul><ul><li>Handheld RFID readers (Nordic ID) </li></ul><ul><li>Process support </li></ul><ul><li>Quality assurance </li></ul><ul><li>SIMPLE HANDHELD CENTRAL </li></ul><ul><li>Manage security </li></ul><ul><li>Manage software updates </li></ul><ul><li>PARTNER SOLUTION </li></ul><ul><li>Authenticate </li></ul><ul><li>Count </li></ul><ul><li>Deployments </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Handheld devices (Nordic ID, Panmobil) </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Fixed portals </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Components to enable custom partner solutions </li></ul></ul>
  11. 11. Vision: The solution is prepared to be able to grow in several directions CC Domain Partner Domain Current scope The core solution Increased product coverage Deeper insight Auction houses, large scale users,… Growers, transporters,… Count & Authenticate Extend simple functionality with ability to count Track & Trace Support track and trace Authenticate Equip partners and customers with simple handheld devices to be able to authenticate Increased coverage Tag additional physical dimensions, e.g. container shelves New products Extend core infrastructure to additional products Count & authenticate RTI’s Infrastructure Processes
