This work discusses the mathematical knowledge used in the day to day work
environment of electronics technicians working in an automotive industry in the
metropolitan area of Porto Alegre. From the analysis of the data obtained through
interviews with some technicians it can be concluded that mathematical knowledge
helps to ensure greater security and certainty in decision making during problem
solving and improvements proposing in the production process. Mathematical skills
contribute to the development of graphical tools for monitoring the cycle time of the
operations, and interpretation of these data allows better monitoring and optimization
of the production process. Knowledge of the characteristics and limitations of the
Programmable Logic Controller (PLC), achieved by reading product manuals, along
with the mathematical reasoning, allows the detection and correction of existing unpredictabilities in software programming, making the process more reliable.
