    • 3500 BC- earliest sundials, obelisks from Ancient Egyptian and Babylonian Astronomy
    • 900’s BC-
    • First astrolabes based on Hellenistic (Greek) sources Muhammad al-Fazari
    • Muhammad al- Battani
    • Found references to the 1st observation tube in his work
      • Influences the design of the telescope
      • They had no lenses but can focus on part of the sky by eliminating light interference
      • Determines the solar year is 365 days, 5 hours, 46 min, 24 seconds
  • 3. Olden Times Timeline
    • 1206- Al- Jazari invented the first programmable analog computer (his largest astronomical clock)
    • 1577-1580: Taqi al-Din invents an astronomical clock which measures time in seconds (now accurate enough for astronomical purposes)
    • 1589-1590: Ali Kashmiri ibn Luqman invents a celestial globe without seams
  • 4. 1600’s
    • Galileo Galilei
    • 1609- makes a telescope: based on the invention of a Dutch lens maker
      • Uses telescope to discover Jupiter's 4 largest moons
      • Studies the moon and sunspots
      • Observes Saturn’s shape and Venus
      • 1610: uses his observations to prove Earth goes around the Sun
      • 1668- Newton- invents the reflecting telescope, by using mirrors.
  • 5. In Between & Rockets
    • 1840- first photograph of the moon
    • 1926- Robert Goddard: builds and launches 1 st liquid-fueled rocket
    • 1942- German Scientists launch V-2, 1 st rocket to reach space
  • 6. Space Race
    • Oct 4, 1957-sputnik was launched: first artificial satellite ICBM(inter continental ballistic missiles)- proves they can bomb the us, US is not the leader on technology (Russia is)
    • Nov 3, 1957- the first animal was launched in space proving life can survive in space- they are looking down on us

    • April 12, 1961- first human in space, Yuri Gagarin
    •  
    • May 5, 1961- first American in space, Alan Shephard
    •  
    • 1961 - JFK states that the us will have someone on the moon by the end of the decade
    •  
    • July 20, 1969- Apollo 11- Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin: first people to walk on the moon: first time the United States are winning.

    • Russians and Americans joined together to create the International Space Station

    • Space X-
      • Is a commercially owned business, that is into space exploration
      • Sets up space crafts cheaper than the US government can
      • The man who created this also created Pay-Pal
      • People that are interested in only space, will create our future in space.

    • The Green Blob-
      • In 2007 a 24 year old elementary school teacher, Harry van Arkel, discovered a new galaxy. There is a worldwide Galaxy Zoo project where everyday people can look at pictures of space and archived star photographs to catalog new objects. This was a photo from the Hubble telescope, which was launched in 1990. Hubble and these types of programs will create our future.
      • With more eyes looking at space, the world will see more and new things to explore.
