  • The other thing is the joy and pleasure of looking through other people’s work. Paul Strand, Walker Evans, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Dorothea Lange, Margaret Bourke-White … you see how they made their pictures, how they frame things, their kind of visual vocabulary. I can't imagine a musician not listening to other people’s music or an actor not learning from other actors, and building on the past. Not that you want your work to be derivative, but it’s fun to leaf through a really good book of photography.
  • “If you wait people will forget your camera and the soul will drift up into view.”
  • After a while I developed a certain method of working where I either got my shot quickly before I am noticed; or I hung around my subjects so long until they get bored or accustomed to me and continue about their usual routines.
  • For me, being a photographer has been an enormous amount of fun. I have had the wonderful opportunity of visiting the amazing places I have shot in. I can’t imagine a better way to spend your time and life than exploring this amazing planet.
  • The first thing to me is the human aspect of the picture, to try to convey some sort of empathy with the subject and, secondly, the composition and the form of how that picture's put together. I like to have the photo communicate what it's like to be that person. -Steve McCurry
