Page 1 Different Uses of Additives Additives are any natural or artificial materials, other than the essential raw ingredients, used in the production of a food items to increase the final product. They are substances that affect the uniqueness of any food, including those used in the making, processing, handling, packaging, moving or storage of food. Additives are mainly added to food that are made and processed on large scale to meet the requirements of supermarkets and other food shops. They are added to increase the shelf life of food products. They are also used in a number of organic foods to maintain the quality. Some of the best additives used in food processing units are emulsifiers, preservatives, stabilizers, anti-oxidants, thickening agents and flavors. Though all the additives used in food processing are vital for extending the life and quality of produced food items, but preservatives have a special role to play in the entire process. Preservatives are mainly used to prevent the germination of microbes on food particles. It has been observed that microbes grow quickly when they get right conditions such as warm and moist environment. The greatest challenge faced today by professionals in food processing units is to prevent food items from getting spoiled. The greatest threat to the quality and safety of food comes from microbial spoilage. Microbes grow very rapidly on food items and cause a number of problems including bad taste, unpleasant smell and poor appearance. Also, the growth of microbes may lead to dangerous levels of toxins in the food. All these problems can make food unfit to be consumed. Today, a wide range of preservatives are used by professionals working in different food processing units to prevent food from getting spoiled by different kinds of microbes. Different types of preservatives are sensitive to different types of preservatives. So, a wide range of these useful items are used these days. They are used for all types of food. Some of these foods include low fat spreads, cheese, margarine, mayonnaise and dressing. You will also find them on bakery products and dried fruit preparations. Many other methods are used to prevent food from getting spoiled. Some of them include canning, freezing, drying, pickling, and smoking. All these procedures are carried to increase the life of the food items. There is no dearth of good preservatives in the market today.
