  2. 2. Types of Feathers Feathers: 1. Contour feathers – give shape (aerodynamic) 2. Flight feathers – allow birds to fly 3. Down feathers – provide warmth 4. Powder-down feathers – make them waterproof (because of powder).
  3. 3. Bird Food Most diets consist of seeds/fruits or nectar. 2 Type of Seeds: 1. Cereal Seeds: high carbohydrates • Ex. Canary Seed, Millet, Corn 2. Oil Seeds: high fats, low carbs • Peanuts, Sunflower seeds
  4. 4. Bird Food To Soak Seed for baby birds: 1. Soak in warm water for 24 hrs 2. Water poured out and seeds wash with water. 3. Any uneaten seeds should be removed. 4. Wash container before another use.
  5. 5. Bird Digestion Birds do not have teeth to grind up food, so they swallow food whole. Food goes down the esophagus and into the crop. Crop is an enlargement of the esophagus.
  6. 6. Bird From the crop the food goes to the gizzard. Gizzard is where the food is crushed and grinded up. (Birds usually swallow rocks to help)
  7. 7. Bird Then into the small intestines, to large intestines, and out through the cloaca. Cloaca – opening used for reproduction and digestive waste (feces and urination).
