  • 3. History
    • Exact date is unknown, but it was before the Ancient Olympic Games
    • The modern game developed in England in the mid-19 th century.
    • First appeared in 1908 at the London Games
    • At first it was said to be too dangerous for females to play and now is mostly played by women.

  • 4. Basic Rules
    • There are two halves played at 30 minutes each
    • 11 players per side
    • You are only allowed to use one side of the stick
    • Goal has to be scored from inside the striking circle
    • You are not allowed to shield the ball with your body or stick
    • The field is 100 yards long and 60 yards wide
    • Not allowed to advance the ball in any other way besides using the stick
    • Not allowed to hit, hold, or hook another players stick

  • 5. Straight Dribble
    • You want your right hand on the stick as if you were shaking it and your left hand on the end of the stick having your thumb and index finger making an inverted “V”
    • The stick is on the ball at all times and the ball is on the front right of the body
    • Arms relaxed and away from the body (right arm extended further than left arm)
    • Ball should be kept close to the body

  • 6. Indian Dribble
    • Left hand is at the top of the stick and right hand is looser and allows your left hand to rotate the stick within it
    • Keep your feet behind the ball
    • Keep your stick close to your ball
    • Ball is positioned in front of the body and is rolled over on alternate sides by the use of forehand and reverse stick taps
    • Stay low and reach out for the ball

  • 7. Push Pass
    • Have proper grip on the stick
    • Quick footwork to get body into passing position (feet lined up so that together the left foot and shoulder are in front of the right foot and shoulder. Your feet should also be facing your target
    • Weight transfer from right leg to left leg gives you the max strength. You can do it opposite if you don’t have enough time or if you are trying to throw your opponent off
    • Right hand low on the stick
    • Knees bend and stick on the ground
    • Keep stick on the ball, no backswing
    • Ball should be contacted opposite the left foot
    • Extend arms away from the body to push the ball forward. Let wrists snap as the skill is completed
    • Follow through in the direction of your target (head over a bent left knee)

  • 8. Non- Stick- Side Dodge
    • Player in possession sends the ball ahead and close to the non-stick-side of the approaching opponent
    • Player runs to the stick side of the opponent (ball goes right and player goes left)
    • Receive the ball behind the opponent
    • Have control of the ball
    • You want to dodge your opponent so they don’t get the ball from you.

  • 9. Hitting
    • Point shoulders and feet toward your target. Bend your knees
    • Line the ball up level with your foot
    • Keep your hands together with a shortened grip
    • Focus on the back of the ball
    • Follow through and transfer your weight towards your target
    • You use this to shoot the ball into the goal. This gives you a more affective way to get the ball in the goal with accuracy and speed.

  • 10. Goalkeeping
    • You want to start in an athletic stance. Feet shoulder width apart, weight even on both balls of the feet and forearms parallel to the ground
    • Grab the stick with your palms facing out
    • Your head should be up watching the ball
    • When the ball reaches your stick you want to “give” with the stick so the ball will stop in front of you

  • 11. Tackling
    • Basic athletic stance
    • Have the stick low to the ground
    • Make sure your feet are always moving and try to get the person with the ball to go toward your stick side (this will make it easier to tackle)
    • When you are ready to tackle, extend the stick with your left hand to jab under the ball
    • Fake jabs also may be successful

  • 12. Field Hockey Terms
    • Center pass- technique used to start a game at the beginning or at halftime and to restart play after a goal
    • Dodge- play used to avoid your opponent although maintaining control of the ball
    • Dribble- the way you move the ball on the field
    • Hit- used to pass the ball that provides power and distance
    • Obstruction- foul made by placing your body between the opponent and the ball (interfering with opponents effort to play or reach the ball)
    • Push back- used to start the game at the beginning or half time and to restart the game after a goal was scored
    • Reverse stick- turning the stick over to play the ball on the left side
    • Stick side- player’s right side
    • Tackle- skill to dislodge the ball from an opponent
