  • I agree Ritalin is not safe!! I have Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder (ADHD) and it has really affected my quality of life when it comes to education. However the Ritalin I used to treat my ADHD, has left me with both chronic mental and physical illness. The drug has caused depression, anxiety and chronic constipation. Now I can't focus at all. Why? Because my body relies on this drug and once you stop it, you’re back to the start of your problem! I'm so depressed I can't concentrate and have lost interest in everything since I stopped this drug. My stomach causes me so much pain. This is because Ritalin acted like a laxative and now I've stopped this drug, my bowels are not functioning. It's a real battle to use the toilet and I'm completely dependent on laxatives!
So then what?! My psychiatrist gives me more mind altering drugs!! ssri's, snri's (these did not work) and so on. I am now going to refuse to see him again, because he finally gave me an anti- psychotic drug, which is at another level when it comes to side-effects.
I would agree that these drugs can fix your problem short term, however be prepared long term to pay the price. NOTHING COMES FOR FREE AND THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS A MAGIC PILL.
When you report these long term side - effects, your doctor will tell you that they are not related to the drug and that these are problems related to your ADHD. For example, depression is a result of ADHD, constipation is a result of anxiety. Of course in my case this is not true, even my family support this. I never suffered from depression, anxiety and chronic constipation. I was a very active person who enjoyed athletics. My nutritional intake is very good and always has been. Before Ritalin I had no problems, other than lack of concentration and lots of energy
Most studies on the use of drugs in the treatment of any form of mental illness show that those who use drugs to treat their mental illness end up much more mentally ill long term compared to those who don't use them!
These are dangerous mind altering drugs. Yes all drugs have side - effects. But believe me, the negatives out way the benefits, when it comes to Ritalin!!

  • This is stupid. All medications have side effects and if you read the contraindictations to even panadol, they all have scary side effects. Try thinking about the potential risks for NOT treating your child with ritalin. Increased chance of self medicating in their teen years by taking recreational drugs, smoking cigarettes and marijuana as adhd people are trying to medicate themselves. The difference is, you treat your child with the correct method; i.e. medication combined with psychotherapy/CBT, then the chances of your child growing out of their adhd symptoms and having a healthier and happier life in their teen and adult years. ADHD affects your relationships, your work and therefore everything in adult hood. Its best to knock it on the head early. The neuropathways are easier to manipulate and there isn't 30 + years of habits already formed. Yes, you need to be aware of the side effects and watch, but just because they are possible doesn't mean your child is going to get all of them...if any! Look up the side effects to any other medication....I bet you see stuff you don't like. I have adhd and I strongly feel that people who don't have it, have absolutely no idea how it feels to have adhd and therefore listen to an adult who has. I wish my adhd was picked up and sorted as a child, then I probably wouldn't have had to deal with half of the relationship issues, work issues and would have thought about a career option instead of realising at 28 what I want to do. Now I have to start all over.
