  • The Placewhere there isNo Darkness
    By,
MuhammedNathoo, Ashley Kim, Joshua Song, and Arun Philip
  • Did That Scare You?
Well, if that did scare you, then imagine a totalitarian government, such as the one presented in George Orwell’s 1984, using this power. Under this government, one wouldn’t be able to think or even function for themselves.
  • Synopsis
Winston Smith, Julia, O’Brien, Big Brother
    Setting : London, Oceania
The Party controls everything, even the history and language
Winston feels frustrated by rigid control of Party
Winston works at Ministry of Truth and has an affair w/ a co-worker named Julia
Winston receives message he’s been waiting for from O’Brien
O’Brien lies to Winston by saying that he hates the Party
Soldiers barge in and take away Winston and Julia to Ministry of Love
O’Brien turns out to be a Party spy and spends months torturing Winston
At last, O’Brien sends Winston to Room 101 where Winston snaps b/c of his fear of rats
Winston is released to outside world
He accepted the Party and has learned to love Big Brother
  • RATS!
They are the objects of Winston’s inner-most fears. This was revealed early on in the book, but does not play a big role until the end. The government, eventually, took advantage of his rat-phobia and used some rats to break and completely crush Winston’s will-power, causing him to lose all humane reason. These rats drove him to become, “insane, a screaming animal.” (p 235)
  • Quote #1 from 1984
The mask was closing on his face. The wire brushed his cheek. and then--no, it was not relief, only hope, a tiny fragment of hope. Too late, perhaps too late. But he had suddenly understood that in the whole world there was just one person to whom he could transfer his punishment-- one body that he could thrust between himself and the rats. And he was shouting frantically, over and over: "Do it to Julia! Do it to Julia! Not me! Julia! I don't care what you do to her. tear her face off, strip her to the bones. Not me! Julia! Not me!"
    (p 236)
  • Quote #2 from 1984
The cage was nearer; it was closing in. Winston heard a succession of shrill cries which appeared to be occurring in the air above his head. But he fought furiously against his panic. To think, to think, even with a split second left – to think was the only hope. Suddenly the foul musty odor of the brutes struck his nostrils. There was a violent convulsion of nausea inside him, and he almost lost consciousness. Everything had gone black. For an instant he was insane, a screaming animal.
  • Totalitarian Rule
Under the circumstances that the totalitarian government put Winston in, they eradicated all individual thoughts and, in turn, caused one’s independence to fall apart.
  • Quote #3 from 1984
It was terribly dangerous to let your thoughts wander when you were in any public place or within range of a telescreen. The smallest thing could give you away. A nervous tic, an unconscious look of anxiety, a habit of muttering to yourself--anything that carried with it the suggestion of abnormality, of having something to hide.
  • Quote #4 from 1984
'Five! Five! Five!' 'No, Winston, that is no use. You are lying. You still think there are four. How many fingers, please?' 'Four! five! Four! Anything you like. Only stop it, stop the pain!'
  • “HE LOVED BIG BROTHER.”(PG. 245)
