Worldmarketsthisweek
The FTSE, the only major European index to eye a large
percentage gain for the week, was weighed down by en-
ergy stocks such as BP and Shell as Brent crude held near a
four-year low just above $77 a barrel. Oil prices have been
hit by concerns over excess supply and uncertainty over
whether OPEC would cut output at a meeting in two
weeks.
Asian equities were mostly lower on the last trading day of
the week, brushing off a positive finish on Wall Street.
WallStreetUpdate
Stock prices were remarkably steady through most of the
week, especially in comparison to recent volatility, but the
market managed to end the week with modest gains that
took the large-cap benchmarks to new records. The S&P
500 Index's largest daily change was on Monday, when it
rose 0.31%, but its largest fluctuation from close to close
over the remainder of the week was 0.07% a remarkable
shift from recent weeks, when 1% or even 2% swings were
common. The Nasdaq fared better than the other bench-
marks, helped by strength in technology stocks.
A relatively thin economic calendar and the lack of any
major surprises may have been reasons for the marketโs
stability. Weekly jobless claims rose slightly more than ex-
pected, but investors were encouraged by separate data
showing healthy hiring in September. The number of peo-
ple leaving jobs voluntarily hit its highest level since before
the financial crisis, a sign of Americans' greater confidence
in their ability to find another job. The better job market
was reflected in a rise in the University of Michigan's index
of consumer sentiment, and retail sales in October rose a
bit more than expected.
IndianMarketsโWeeklyRoundup
Both indices continued to smash previous records all
through the week and ended the week at all-time high lev-
els; BSE Sensex breached the 28,000 figure for first time
ever. The mid-cap and small-cap stocks stole a march over
Sensex and Nifty's tepid gains. The BSE small-cap index
was up 1 percent and CNX mid-cap swelled 1.7 percent.
Friday marked the end of the September quarter earnings
season and market is now likely to follow global cues,
crude oil price trend and FPI investments.
