Tutorial Learn how to contribute an image to the Encyclopedia of Life using Flickr May 2012http://www.flickr.com/groups/encyclopedia_of_life

Overview• Join Flickr• Join the EOL Group• Upload your photo (make sure it is public)• Add at least one machine tag• Change the license on your image• Add the image to the EOL group pool of photos• Previous three steps may be done in any order• Images will be automatically gathered up by EOL and displayed as “unreviewed content” Return to Overview

Join Flickr• Basic Flickr accounts are free• To join, click on the Sign up now button• If you already have a Yahoo, Google or Facebook ID you can use it to register at Flickr Return to Overview

Join the EOL GroupGo to the EOL Images group homepage http://www.flickr.com/groups/encyclopedia_of_lifeClick Join This Group and become a member. You will need to accept the basic rulesof the group in order to join. Scroll down the group homepage to learn more aboutthe group before you begin. Return to Overview

Upload your photoClick on the Upload option on the upper right hand side of your screen Return to Overview

Click on Old Uploadr

Click Choose photos and a dialogue box will open: Return to Overview

The dialogue box allows you to select the fileyou want to upload. Larger file sizes are best. Return to Overview

Now your selected photo(s) should appear on the upload list.Make sure the privacy is set to “Public” and then click the pinkbutton that says Upload Photos and Videos. Return to Overview

Titles, Descriptions and TagsOnce Flickr finishes uploading the photo, a green checkmark will appear,click on it to add a title, description and tag to your photo.

In this screen you can add a title and a description that will show up on EOL. You will also need to add a “machine tag” which will help place the image on the correct EOL page(s).Enter a machine tag and clickon the blue ADD button.(more info about tagging on next slide)Add a title, either a scientific orcommon name Add a description When you are done, you will click on the blue Save button.

Tagging Your Image on Flickr• A tag provides information about what is pictured in the image.• You will need to add a special kind of tag called a “machine tag” to your image. Taxonomic Tags for Flickr ToolYou can use the iNaturalist.org Taxonomic Tags for Flickr tool to search for tags for yourspecies image.•Go to: http://inaturalist.org/taxa/flickr_tagger•Enter in the common or scientific name of the species (at any taxonomic level) and clickLookup. iNaturalist will automatically look species that match your key words.•Click Make Tags to see possible taxonomic names for you to choose from, which youcan copy and paste into the tag box in Flickr Return to Overview

• Click on the Make tags button to generate your tag or tags• Copy and paste the tag into the tag field on Flickr*** Remember when you enter in a species name with a space such Limulus polyphemus , you need to use quotation marks when you enter the tag into Flickr:(ex. “taxonomy:binomial=Limulus polyphemus” ) Return to Overview

Automatic Image TaggingYou can also link your Flickr Photostream to iNaturalist to automatically tag yourimages.•Create a free iNaturalist Account and follow prompts to “link” your account to Flickr•Search for and make tags•Choose photos from your photostream to be automatically tagged and click Tag thesephotos Return to Overview

You can manually enter one or more of the following machine tags: You only need ONE of these tags for your image to be included in EOL. Binomial is best, but you can be less specific if necessary. The names (except for common names) should be the Latin, scientific names for the organisms. •taxonomy:kingdom=* for example “taxonomy:binomial=Vanessa atalanta” •taxonomy:phylum=* taxonomy:order=Lepidoptera •taxonomy:class= * •taxonomy:order=* •taxonomy:family=* •taxonomy:genus=* •taxonomy:species=* •taxonomy:binomial=* [e.g. genus and species with a space between them, enclose in quotes when you type] •taxonomy:trinomial=* [e.g. genus, species, and subspecies with spaces between them, enclose in quotes when you type] •taxonomy:common=* [the common, or vernacular, name, probably need quotes if the common name involves two words] •*replace with the name --- There should not be an actual asterisk in your tagIf you need help identifying the organism in your photo, see the ID Help thread in our FlickrEOL Images group discussion. Choose a Creative Commons the License for your photoFor images to be shared through EOL they need to have a Creative Commons License. • Attribution • Attribution, Non-Commercial • Attribution, Non-Commercial-Share Alike • Attribution, Share Alike Briefly... Attribution means: You let others copy, distribute, display, and perform your copyrighted work - and derivative works based upon it - but only if they give you credit. Noncommercial means: You let others copy, distribute, display, and perform your work - and derivative works based upon it - but for non-commercial purposes only. Share Alike means: You allow others to distribute derivative works only under a license identical to the license that governs your work. Return to Overview

How to change a licenseUnder the Owners settings section, click on Edit next to AllRights Reserved.

A popup box will ask you to select a Creative Commons license for yourphoto. Any of the licenses marked with a red circle below are accepted byEOL. Choose a license and click on the blue Save button.

Setting a Default LicenseIf you are going to be submitting a lot of photos to EOL, you will want to change your default license soyou don’t have to set the license one at a time. You can do this by clicking on Organize and CreateDrag the images you want to editinto the main gray area.Click on Permissions, where youcan select a default license for thebatch of images you have selected.You can also add tags and sendyour images to a group in theBatch Organize section. Add Your Image to the EOL Images Group PoolNow that your photo is public, has an acceptable copyright license, and contains amachine tag…click the Actions and choose Add to a group Return to Overview

If you’ve successfully added your image to the Encyclopedia ofLife Image pool, you should now see it on the front page of theEOL group homepage. Images are harvested and imported toEOL every few days Return to Overview

Your image on EOLAn image submitted to the EOL Flickr Group and correctly tagged will appear on EOLwith a gray unreviewed maker, indicating the image has not yet been reviewed.When the image is reviewed by a curator a green trusted marker may appear Return to Overview

You will receive credit for your image and there will bea direct link back to your original image on Flickr. Return to Overview

Comments and actions by EOL Curators on your image will be posted back to the Flickr photo page
