INTRODUCTION
In the 20th century, there was an enormous growth in population due to the arrival of several factories into town.
In 1953 the first earthworks for the construction of the factory of , a large steel mill, were started; it is currently known as Aceralia; other companies in the area are Cristalería Española, which together with ENDASA, turned Avilés into one of the industrial centres in Spain. Nowadays, the city is trying to focus on new industries and recover its antique flavour.
CRISTALERÍA ESPAÑOLA
In 1953 Cristalería Española S.A. was built on the shore of la Ría de Avilés. The main activities are manufacturing glass and its derivatives, plastics and other kinds of materials.
Cristalería Española built El Jardín de Cantos and La Maruca for the workers and the technical staff of the factory.

ASTURIANA DE ZINZ, S.A.
Asturiana of Zinc, S.A (AZSA) is an Asturian company and the principal activities are the exploitation and marketing of all kinds of mineral substances, specially zinc and the products associated with it, as germanium or sulphuric acid. And from 2006 it began the search for silver.
The company was installed in Arnao, near Aviles. It was founded with Belgian and Spanish capital. In addition, there are mines and centers of production in San Juan de Nieva (Asturias), Hinojedo as well as in Germany, United Kingdom and Australia.
ALCOA INESPAL
Alcoa is an American company whose main activity is manufacturing and transforming Aluminium.
The factory arrived some years ago at Avilés, and it is located near the “Ría”. Now, with Ensidesa, Cristalería Española and La Asturiana de Zinc, it is one of the most important factories in the town of Avilés.
