On February 23, 1945, after four days of intense fighting against 10,000 Japanese forces, around 100,000 US Marines conquered Mount Suribachi on Iwo Jima Island in Japan. Photographer Joe Rosenthal captured a iconic photo of six marines raising the American flag at the top of the mountain. The photo was quickly transmitted via radio and airplane to Associated Press headquarters in New York and was printed in newspapers across the US the next day, capturing the nation's attention. The photo later inspired a famous statue at the US Marine Corps War Memorial in Arlington, Virginia.
