  • 1. Darwin● Darwin is the capital cityof the Northern Territory.More than 100 000people live in the city.The city covers an areaof 1660 squarekilometres and is builtaround Darwin Harbourin the Beagle Gulf on theTimor Sea.

  • 3. Historical Background● The first people to live in the areawere the Aboriginal people. They hadoccupied the land for thousands ofyears before European settlersarrived. The Larrakia people lived onthe land in the Darwin area. They livedby hunting and fishing.European settlement began in 1860sand at first the different groups got onwell and sometimes the Aboriginesworked for Europeans. However asmore and more Europeans arrived theAboriginal camps were destroyed theAboriginal people were moved awayfrom the town.The city was officially named in 1839after Charles Darwin, an explorer,naturalist (he studied plants andanimals) and writer.

  • 5. Climate● The weather in Darwin istropical, which means it is hotand wet. There are just twoseasons, the wet fromNovember to March and the dryfrom April to November.● During the wet season strongwinds called monsoons bringheavy rain and the weather ishumid. Average temperaturesare from 24C to 32C.● During the dry season theweather is warm and dry withtemperatures ranging from 19Cto 30C.
